Conversations with Tailer Mora

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tailer Mora.

Hi Tailer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been an artist and designer my whole life, always seeking to make things beautiful. The majority of my professional career was spent as a graphic designer in both print and digital fields. When I bought and renovated my house 10 years ago, I discovered another medium to work with. I enjoyed the transformation process from beginning to end, and most of all I discovered the joy of living within the walls of my creation day in and day out. That first renovation awoke in me a desire to do the same for others, to bring beauty into their most important space, the home.

During the Covid years it became increasingly clear to me that our home is a sanctuary, one that has the potential to hold and reflect our hopes and dreams for ourselves and for our families. It is the place that can support us during difficult times. During the Pandemic the home became more notably sacred to all of us, as it was the place we spent the majority of our time. It literally became our safe zone. I also saw the new challenges that arose during this time especially for working mothers. We needed our space to work differently for us. We needed home offices, family friendly offices and restful bedrooms to retreat to when we had reached capacity. We needed intentional outdoor spaces to be with our loved ones. I saw my friends frazzled and drained juggling work and children at home and I wanted to help.

In my design career up to this point I had maintained the two aspects of my education and interests separate – my professional visual designer self, versus my holistic wellness oriented self. When I started working inside peoples homes I discovered that there was no need to keep it separate anymore. People needed their homes in a different way than they had before. They needed more useful and flexible spaces, less chaos, practical systems to create order, less clutter. They needed authentic and intentional spaces that nourished and supported them.

Working with clients during this time I began to demand more of my design decisions. What other qualities and benefits will the client experience through my designs aside from beauty? Where will my design meet that person in the broader context of their internal and external lives? I began to lean more on my holistic wellness certifications and spiritual studies to guide me in the process of design. Instead of keeping this knowledge separate from my life as a designer, I began to integrate them into my design process and design soon became a means by which to facilitate wellness and connectedness.

There is no separation, it is all one. Holistic design is not just an approach to interior design, it is a lifestyle.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Struggles I have faced opening my business have really been of a personal and self realization nature. I had wanted to build something of my own for a long time, but I was raised in the paradigm of corporate employment and was scared to go out on my own. On my 40th birthday it dawned on me, “it’s now or never”. I knew I had to work through anything that was holding me back in order for me to reach my true potential. I leaned heavily on my holistic practices, spiritual studies and self examination to guide me through my fears and ideas in order to reach the other side. I began taking steps toward pursuing Interior Design and for several years I juggled motherhood, my corporate role, and Interior Design projects on the side. Eventually an opportunity came to me that would require my full attention and I knew it was the moment to take the leap. The journey continues to unfold.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work with individuals to create highly personalized and authentic spaces that facilitate deeper alignment of their inner and outer worlds. As these worlds align, we experience more balance and harmony in our day-to-day lives.

As a practitioner of the Design Enlightenment Method, my approach to design is focused on personal authenticity. Part of this process is guiding my clients into alignment with their desires and lifestyle, and then reflecting those desires and lifestyle back to them through the design of their home. This unique approach to interior design results in deeply authentic and intentional spaces with an emphasis on design as a journey in which the process is equally important as the final outcome.

Ultimately I support transformations, both internal and external. Helping my clients to understand where they are in their own personal transformation process and how they want their space to meet them, lights me up. I believe that the most valuable Return on Investment of Interior Design is an emotional one. A home that is perfectly calibrated to your internal design, will energize and nourish you and your family for years to come.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
In today’s world we place a lot of value on the mind. We are very mental and as mental beings it is difficult to hear the messages of the heart. It is even more difficult to trust the messages of the heart. I feel it is important to balance rationality with intuition. If your heart is whispering to you, validate it’s message with your mind. Think it out, evaluate the risk and make plans. But at the same time, trust that the heart’s message is one that you may never understand with the mind. Hypothetically, I wish I had taken the leap sooner, but deep down I know I wasn’t yet ready to be this version of myself. Once you make a decision, stay the course, continue to put one foot in front of the other, believe in your ability to pursue your vision, get comfortable with the unknown, and trust the process.
