Conversations with Sabina Karac

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabina Karac

Hi Sabina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My parents are from what was formerly known as Yugoslavia before the war, now known as Bosnia.

I was born in Germany where my parents met upon fleeing from the war torn country.

When I was 18 months old we came to America on a Visa where I was raised in Jacksonville Florida.

I am a second generation hairstylist. My mom is a hairstylist as well, my parents didn’t pay for childcare, I was raised in the salon.
I think somewhere in my early 20s I no longer wanted to live in my mother’s shadow, I wanted to create an identity of my own.

Like something out of the movies,
3 years ago I put my 3 cats and my whole life into my car and moved to South Florida.
No plan but only a dream guiding me of what kind of life I wanted to live and the things I wanted to accomplish. I wanted to be free.

It’s one of the biggest risks I have ever taken, and one that I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.
I was always afraid of doing too much or being too much!
With my dance background, bold eccentric makeup became a part of me
It had to be bold and colorful to be able to be seen by a crowd.
Makeup is a form of expression and completed the look.

My time as a Gogo dancer shaped this.
It was one of the very few gigs that had vanity mirrors with lights in the dressing room.
With makeup I could be anyone I wanted to be and most days I was 2 different people.
During the day highlighting my natural beauty, by night dark, bold,& glitter with the biggest lashes I could find were mandatory.

As a kid I didn’t know I could have ever imagined that Gogo dancing let alone painting faces was a career. I get to do what I love everyday while healing my inner child.

I don’t just do hair & makeup, I have a story. My family and I’s life is all about taking risks.
Most importantly not being afraid to fail because it’s one step closer to you succeeding.
I am an embodiment of perseverance, strength, and not being afraid to be different.
Only you can be you.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It most certainly has not been a smooth road.
The identity crisis of who I was apart from living in my mother’s shadow was something that propelled taking a big risk to find myself.

Leaving your hometown with not much of a plan was one of the scariest things I have ever done, but I am grateful.
I am grateful for giving literally the last penny in my pocket at Publix for the money order that would cover my move in deposit for my studio apartment in Miami just years ago.
I am grateful for sleeping on the floor with my cats and blankets of my very own four walls when first moving to Miami.
I am grateful for surviving off of the coffee and chocolate and tips at my first stable job in Miami until my first paycheck two weeks after moving in.
I am grateful for my uncle coming to give me a bed and mattress to sleep on and a few other things to make it a home.

It’s crazy to look back at now, and say wow, I really did that.
If i had to do it again, I wouldn’t do it any different. It was perfect.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Apart from hair and makeup, I am also a model.
For me these 2 business always were cross promotion for me. A majority of my business is promoted by word of mouth.
I would be at a model job and get referred for a hair gig and vise versa.

What set me apart from others is that I would always be jumping from job to job.
One day I would be doing hair, then makeup, another day gogo dancing, and then model.

About a year and a half ago, after attempting to quit my stable salon job about 5 or 6 times, I got tired of the running around and working for others and wanted to work for myself so I OFFICIALLY quit and started the concept of Concierge Beauty.
Concierge Beauty is where I would bring the salon to the client in the comfort of their own home.
I had mentioned this concept to my old boss and my uncle at the time and they both laughed at me and told me it was a stupid idea. I did it anyways, and less then a year later I was making roughly 10K a month working for myself.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Miami is a jungle!
I’ve been to Dubai 3 times now and I believe Miami is better then Dubai.
There is honestly no place like Miami. I ended up in Miami on accident!
I was supposed to end up in New York pre Covid and then New York wasn’t opening up Post Covid shutdown and at that time I lived in Jacksonville Florida and was doing a lot of traveling for work between Jacksonville and New York.
The bills were coming in and Miami seemed to be one of the few places opening up for work at the time that I would also travel to by car.

Every city has it’s cons like traffic but I firmly believe the pros of living in Miami like job opportunity, career advancements, and networking really outweigh the cons.
