Conversations with Philippe Attie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Philippe Attie

Hi Philippe, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Haiti, where my love for painting began in childhood. Initially self-taught, I honed my skills through dedication and discipline, eventually earning apprenticeships with renowned artists Ralph Allen and Richard Barbot. After the devastating earthquake in 2010, my family and I relocated to South Florida, where I continued my artistic journey. Since then, I’ve participated in various exhibitions and competitions. Currently, I’m temporarily in New York to study drawing at the Grand Central Atelier, a school rooted in traditions that pre-date the 19th century and the advent of photography, in order to further strengthen my foundation as an artist.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. My life shifted dramatically after moving to Florida, where I had no connections to the local art scene. I arrived without a studio, collectors, or any ties to the art market. Despite the challenges, I refused the temptation to find a regular full-time job to pay the bills, knowing that once I did, I might have to say goodbye to my career as an artist. Staying committed to my passion has been difficult, but it’s a choice I believe in wholeheartedly.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I primarily paint figures in a realistic style, where aesthetics remain central to my artistic intent regardless of the message I wish to convey. I think in a way I’m trying to portray the essence of human experiences, highlighting the subtle nuances that define individuals or nature in general, really anything that resonates with my soul. Through my art, I aim to share these captured fragments, inviting others to connect with the diverse beauty that surrounds us.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I appreciate most about the city is its vibrant cultural scene and the rich diversity of experiences it offers, from art festivals to culinary delights. It’s a dynamic environment that continually inspires and engages me. While I recognize that the heat and humidity can be quite intense at times, I’ve also noticed that some individuals tend to prioritize materialism, which can shape social interactions in a way that feels superficial. It’s an interesting contrast that reflects the complexity of urban life here.
