Today we’d like to introduce you to Omar Moreno.
Hi Omar, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
OBRAS Studio began over 20 years ago as an idea for a multi-disciplinary practice, blurring the boundaries between all facets of design and the design process. Its focus on Architecture, Urban frameworks, Interior Design, Landscape and Art describes Obras as a complex collaborative studio with the ability to create seamlessness between design elements and constructs. Its founding Principals, Omar Moreno and Giselle Coujil graduated from the University of Florida with master’s degrees in architecture and, twenty years after Obras’ initial inception, now bring to the Studio a wide range of experience from some of Miami’s most esteemed practices.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We don’t feel like owning and operating a business is ever a smooth road. As you develop methods of working as a team and communicating, you are continuously recalibrating your efforts.
Some of the struggles we face include the inconsistency of workload, the changing demands of our clients and the market, and the ever-changing landscape in which we operate. These are the situations we contend with daily. To add to that, we began the business during the Pandemic and really saw a shift in how businesses writ large operate. We had to adapt and are still adapting to the post-pandemic world.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We feel that we approach Architecture and Design from a unique creative perspective. Some of the work we’re most proud of are the more artistic pursuits we’ve been able to add to our repertoire. For example, the urban Sculptures or ‘Amoebas’ that we designed and installed at the Lincoln Center Plaza off of Lincoln Road were very satisfying as artistic expressions. They did not have a long list of programmatic requirements, so I was free to ‘form-make’ with very little limitation. We believe we bring this to our Architectural and Interior Design work as well.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
As a business Owner, you need to be willing to take risks. You need to be able to re-visit things you said you would never do because of changes in circumstances. You need to be nimble and adjust.
