Today we’d like to introduce you to Mimica Blasco.
Hi Mimica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I originally came to the US as a young girl from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I came with my family and our first stop was Miami (what seems like every South American’s right of passage into the US!). I loved it! The city was full of life and we were happy. We stayed in Miami for a few years and then moved west to Los Angeles, CA. This is where my love for the glamour of Hollywood was everywhere around me and I decided I wanted to be a part of it. I went to beauty school and got my license as an aesthetician, make-up artist and hairdresser. I started working on all sorts of projects and worked for an amazing company called Kate Somerville and was doing facials and some big names in Hollywood! I then branched off and started doing hair and got a real feel for red carpet styling and I was completely in love! I then started getting some requests for make-up and started doing make-up for celebrities and VIPs and expanded my business to now include hair and make-up! Little by little, my base of clients grew and grew and the next thing I knew, I was traveling all over the US for commercials and print jobs and living the life! Which brings me full circle to being based on both coasts east and west… Having clients on both sides of the coast and getting to see the world! I love what I do and most importantly, the amazing projects I get to be a part of! Behind the scenes is where the magic happens.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think the biggest struggle for me was establishing what kind of people I wanted to work for and work with. When you first start out in any freelance industry you kind of take anything which comes your way. When you hit a certain point where you have a lot of clients in a lot of jobs that you can start picking and choosing from makes life much more creative and fulfilling. I now have the ability to choose the kind of jobs and things that I want to support. I think that’s really important for anyone in any field in any career… You have to enjoy what you’re doing and be fulfilled! My favorite quote is “choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” I now choose who I work with and as a result, I fully enjoy each and every day of my life. No two days are ever the same!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hair and make-up artist. I specialize in special event hair and makeup and I’m most proud of what my clients have gone on to accomplish looking their very best! I think what sets me apart from other people is communication. I learned very early in this life how important it is to have good people skills and communication skills and every day at work on making myself better so that other people can enjoy my company. I could be the best makeup artist on the planet but have a bad attitude and guaranteed Somebody less skilled who has better communication skills would get hired over me. Therefore be the best communicator in the room be the best most honest and hard work or in the room and guaranteed you will work work work and everyone will refer you because they want to be around you. That has been my success and I believe why my entire business is based on referrals.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I definitely think that having a mentor who you respect and admire is a really good idea it doesn’t mean you have to do exactly whatever they have done in their business you can choose your own path but definitely being inspired is a big part of being an artist and increasing the productivity of your business. I will say what’s worked for me best is being involved in my community and doing things to help others. I think it balances life out otherwise it can be a very lonely place if you’re just concentrating on your own success. Wanting other people to have success is a beautiful mindset and we should all strive for helping those around us. I would not be where I am today without all the referrals my clients gave me early on. Those contacts bred new contacts and next thing you know, I’m working with VIP’s and people making a difference in our current culture. Cheers!
