Today we’d like to introduce you to Mercedes Russell
Hi Mercedes, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my journey in marketing, earning a Bachelor’s degree in the field, but quickly realized that my true passion lay in cosmetology. While the business knowledge I gained in college was helpful, I should have gone straight to beauty school. Nevertheless, I became licensed in cosmetology and began working in corporate settings, only doing hair on Saturdays. Over the years, I bounced around various salons and suites, even working from home at one point. Finally, in 2016, I opened my own salon in Coral Springs.
Building a team of talented women was a huge part of my journey. I wanted to create a space where stylists could not only grow their craft but also learn the business side of things and build their own paths. Now, in 2024, I’m making significant changes to the salon to keep up with the ever-evolving industry. In 2025, I envision my salon becoming more than just a place to get your hair done — it will be a community for stylists looking to run their own businesses and thrive independently.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. While I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist since 2011 — finishing my certification just a week before delivering my oldest daughter — balancing work, being a wife, and home life with four kids has been a challenge. Every day presents its own obstacles, and figuring out how to make my business thrive has been a constant learning experience. It’s been about trial and error, adapting to change, and finding ways to keep pushing forward.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m the owner of a salon and a licensed cosmetologist specializing in natural hair care and extensions. Over the years, I’ve built a reputation for providing high-quality, personalized services that help clients look and feel their best. Whether it’s nurturing natural hair or transforming a client’s look with extensions, my focus is always on enhancing beauty in a way that feels authentic and empowering.
What I’m most proud of is never giving up. There have been challenges along the way, but I’ve always persevered. My hustle is what truly sets me apart. I’m the type of person who doesn’t back down when I set my mind to something. Whether it’s growing my business, learning new techniques, or overcoming personal obstacles, I find a way to get things done. That determination has been a driving force behind my success.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my fondest memories is growing up in a community where we spent our days playing outside and interacting with other kids. The friendships and sense of connection from that time have stayed with me and are reflected in the environment I’ve built in my salon. I strive to create a similar atmosphere in my business — one of camaraderie and support among women, where we all grow and succeed together.
