Conversations with Lurvin Valdez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lurvin Valdez.

Hi Lurvin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello, my name is Lurvin Valdez. I come from a beautiful Central American country called Honduras. I’m a professional photographer, and I started this project over three years ago. One day, while I was at work, a photo shoot was done for the company I worked for. I loved watching them in a corner, observing the process, and I think it was love at first sight. After that day, I decided to start studying. My preparation was a very difficult process since I’m a single mother with many financial limitations, but my love for my daughter, my desire to succeed, and my faith in God and in myself helped me not to give up. It was a very difficult time because sometimes I had to abandon my studies for financial reasons, but something inside me told me, “Don’t give up, you’re going to achieve it.” My daughter has always been my muse and my inspiration, also my friend. She would tell me, “Mom, you can do it,” and from there, I little by little began to… After a short time, I managed to graduate. I gradually started working on small projects, from family photos and real estate to birthdays, weddings, graduations, and corporate portraits, among others. Today, I’m taking it one step at a time, learning something different with each project. I discovered that when you truly want something, nothing should stop you from achieving your dreams. So today, I encourage you: if you have a dream, no matter how crazy or big it may seem, that brings joy to your heart, go for it! Don’t keep it hidden away. Life is a gift from God, and working on what we love and achieving our dreams is a way to be happy.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it wasn’t an easy path. Well, one of my difficulties was the lack of financial resources. I’m a single mother, and the help I received came from my daughter’s father and some small jobs I managed to get. I started studying with a $300 camera, and as you know, the cheaper a camera is, the more basic it is. It was hard for me to compare my work with my classmates since they used much more expensive, modern equipment with many features. Another obstacle was that sometimes I did the work with fear, and many times people made me lose faith. But then I thought, it doesn’t matter, I’ll take it one step at a time. My failures shouldn’t discourage me; on the contrary, they show me the areas where I need to work harder.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional photographer in the South Miami area. I specialize in corporate portraits, family photography, weddings, graduations, real estate, and more. I am known for supporting small businesses. I love teamwork and believe we should all help each other grow. I am very proud of my journey, as my challenges have instilled in me a deep love and appreciation for what I do. I believe what sets me apart is my desire to help others. Sometimes people can’t afford a session or have limitations, but I feel that helping others is helping yourself.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Yes, I believe there will be changes. Technology is advancing very rapidly, and there are huge technological advances. But I think that sometimes it’s important to use these tools appropriately, without abusing them. For example, the use of filters—I think it’s appropriate to make some adjustments to a photograph, but in a way that makes them look real. For example, be yourself, don’t try to look like someone you’re not. We are all unique and perfect, with different bodies, heights, skin tones, and hair, but we are all complete, and that is our greatest gift. I know there will be trends like fashion, art, business, and others, but I encourage you not to forget what’s most important: family, love, dreams, supporting others like your community, and above all, teamwork.
