Conversations with Lauren Arkin-Malacsina

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Arkin-Malacsina.

Lauren Arkin-Malacsina

Hi Lauren, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got into the fashion/costume industry back while I was in high school, so it has been 19 years. I went to Design and Architecture Senior High School, which had a fashion strand that I studied for four years.

Teachers at the school were industry professionals who used their connections to give real-life experiences to the students. I own LA Boudoir Miami, which is an online vintage store. I also offer wardrobe styling services for photoshoots, film/TV, theater, etc. Sometimes, I use products from my store or clients’ items.

I can help clients find certain vintage items they are looking for, either to wear to a party or a special event or just to collect. I am most proud of keeping my business going and persevering through hard times. This shows that I am goal-oriented and passionate about my business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In 2017, I had to pivot my business from being a brick-and-mortar store to an online-only store. The landlords of the business raised the rent so high it was not going to be profitable for me to stay in the location.

This turned out to be a blessing in disguise because my husband had a relocation opportunity arise shortly after, so I was able to temporarily move my business before moving back to Miami. Since then, being online has been an easier work/life solution for my family and has made it less stressful during the pandemic.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
After I opened my vintage store, I became known as a place to get vintage lingerie, specializing in pin-up style lingerie. In 2011, I was awarded “Best Vintage Lingerie Shop” by Miami New Times, and since then, I have won this same award numerous times, including being nominated for 2024.

I have photographers, film studios, and artists contact me for pieces from the 1950s-70s, predominately for lingerie. One of the main aspects that sets me apart from other vintage shops, either brick-and-mortar or online, is I offer affordable vintage items. I want anybody (either low or high-budget) to be able to appreciate and buy vintage items.

Networking and finding a mentor can positively impact one’s life and career. Any advice?
My best advice is to use every opportunity as a way to find a mentor.

Go to different events and be open to talking to different professionals, and they can help open up doors for you. Don’t just pigeonhole yourself into one industry because many industries have overlapping opportunities.
