Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerlly Castellano Crespo.
Hi Kerlly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I discovered Pilates, originally named Contrology by its creator, as a teenage dancer, and it quickly became the foundation of every physical discipline I pursued—the method that gave me strength, stability, and control. In 2015, I began my classical Pilates apprenticeship in the Romana lineage, becoming a fourth-generation classical instructor in 2017.
I’ve always been drawn to movement, discipline, and feeling connected to my body, which is what ultimately inspired me to open my studio as I’d like to share that passion with others. I especially enjoy working with athletes, dancers, and prenatal clients who want to improve performance, build balanced strength, and develop a deeper understanding of movement and biomechanics. I’m eager to guide others to find the method within themselves and use it in their every day life. I don’t see it as merely exercise, I see it as a way of life – a daily practice.
When I moved to Jupiter and realized there was no fully equipped Gratz classical Pilates studio offering the complete system, I knew it was time to build one. That vision became Body Contrology Lab — a space dedicated to preserving the integrity of classical Pilates in an elevated and intentional way. It’s a place where clients can experience a whole body workout but also exercise their mind and explore their body’s physical capacity. Opening the studio has been incredibly rewarding because it combines my passion for wellness, education, and creating a meaningful experience for the community in the spirit of Joseph Pilates’ original method of vigorous exercise that trains the mind to master the body.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges along the way has been educating clients on the difference between authentic classical Pilates and the trend-based, Pilates-inspired fitness training that often uses the Pilates name without truly teaching the method. Because people are constantly exposed to look-alike versions of Pilates through social media and large-scale fitness corporations that dilute the method, it can be difficult for clients to initially understand the depth, structure, and intentionality of authentic classical Pilates.
Building a studio dedicated to there original system on authentic apparatus has required a lot of patience, consistency, and dedication. Over time, though, it’s been incredibly rewarding to see clients begin to feel and recognize the difference for themselves through the results they experience in their bodies and movement.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart is my commitment to preserving the integrity of the authentic classical Pilates system in a time when much of the industry has shifted toward trend-based Pilates-inspired fitness. In addition to my classical Pilates training, I also have a degree in anesthesia as a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant, which gives me a strong foundation in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and whole-body health that naturally informs my teaching. Few other pilates teachers have such an in-depth foundation in those related topics and I’m glad that I can also bring that expertise into my clients’ Pilates experience.
I’m most proud of creating a space that I dreamt of since moving to Jupiter. I was driving 45+ minutes to be in a classical studio with authentic apparatus and in a like-minded community. I’m glad I have created a space where clients can experience the depth, precision, and transformation Gratz apparatus offers in addition to the original method and build a community of disciplined practitioners.
How do you think about luck?
I think a lot of my path has been a combination of passion, preparation, and luck. In many ways, Pilates found me. I discovered it as a teenage dancer, and from my first certification as a fresh high school graduate, it immediately aligned with my interests in movement, discipline, and health.
I was very fortunate to deepen my education through Romana-lineage training in Boston under my mentor, Julie Erickson, who opened her arms and her studio to me to apprentice. That experience deeply shaped both my teaching and my understanding of the integrity of the classical method and I am forever grateful to her for taking me under her wing.
Simultaneously, pursuing a career in anesthesia gave me not only a strong foundation in anatomy and physiology that naturally informs my teaching, but also the stability to continue investing in my own Pilates education and long-term vision. Looking back, it feels like classical pilates was the most natural path I could have taken as a former dancer deeply interested in movement and health.
