Conversations with Katia Luu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katia Luu.

Hi Katia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Around my freshman/sophomore year of college, I started out doing photography and videography as a hobby. I didn’t have a camera of my own at the time, but luckily my school’s library offered rental equipment. I went to USF, so I began tapping into the creative scene in Tampa and connecting with the music artists and models there. I would shoot and edit music videos and do photoshoots for very cheap just to gain some experience. Eventually, I got some equipment of my own and began improving my craft more. I then started creating content for a local creative blog in the city and also interned at a film production company in Tampa which taught me a lot about the industry! In the months leading up to my graduation, I started working more closely in the live music realm doing concert photography and videography which I now continue to do and love!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, I wouldn’t say it has always been a smooth road! As mentioned above, when I first started out, I did a lot of work for very cheap or even free just to gain experience. This can be hard when you are just starting out, but I knew that all those hours of free or cheap work would eventually pay off and I could later down the line start charging my worth. In this industry and as a creative, you will also hear a lot of “no’s”. You’ll have weeks where you feel discouraged and unmotivated, and then weeks where you feel so inspired and accomplished, but that all contribute to the beauty of it!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a photographer and videographer. Whether I’m shooting music festivals or portraits, my work aims to capture people and moments in a creative way that gives a unique perspective. I also love documenting important or exciting moments in time through my photos and videos that I will be able to look back on for years to come.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Experiencing the Covid-19 crisis made me realize the importance of adaptability when things do not go as planned. Half of the time in my industry, things never go exactly as planned anyways, so the pandemic just highlighted that ten times more. It was definitely a time for evolving and learning.
