Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Padró.
Hi Joyce, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your back story.
My extreme passion for creating a beautiful environment and dressing up has brought me to where I am today, embarking on an exciting new journey called Casa Taupe. In 2011, I made the bold decision to leave Puerto Rico and move to the US in pursuit of a career in the menswear fashion industry. At just 20 years old, I found myself on my own in Washington, DC, determined to improve my English and earn a bachelor’s degree in Fashion & Retail Management.
During those early years, my parents were facing the challenges of the 2008 recession, and I needed to find a way to support myself financially while studying. That’s when I discovered an incredible startup European menswear brand. With such enthusiasm, I joined the brand’s third US location as a part-time sales professional. Little did I know that this would be the beginning of an extraordinary career path that would span over a decade.
Through hard work and extreme determination, I gradually climbed the ranks within the company. What started as a part-time sales role evolved into a position as the Head of Visuals for their stores across the Americas. I had the incredible opportunity to travel and open stores in major cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, Miami, and many others. My journey immersed me in the world of retail, store design, visual merchandising, and the art of creating captivating commercial spaces.
Throughout my twenties, I found immense joy in styling men and helping them radiate confidence through clothing. But as my passion continued to grow, I couldn’t ignore the calling to explore my love for home styling.
Casa Taupe was born when I moved into my one-bedroom apartment. From a young age, I had always dreamed of having a space where I could let my creativity run wild and style it according to my desires. I became obsessed with finding rare, budget-friendly pieces and transforming every corner of my apartment into a haven of elegance and coziness.
Now, I am thrilled to be sharing my sanctuary with the world through Casa Taupe. I want to inspire others to enhance the romantic atmosphere of their homes with my tips and insights. Helping people through my genuine passion is truly what I love.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like everyone on their journey, I had my fair share of doubts and fears before Casa Taupe even became an idea. But with my accumulated experience and a burning desire to create something of my own, I took a leap of faith.
It’s only been 5 months since I started, so I know the challenges are just beginning. Starting anything new is always challenging, especially when it’s a passion you believe you have talent in because perfection gets in the way. That initial uncertainty is the first and biggest struggle.
Once I began, I found myself comparing my progress to other established interior styling pages that were way ahead of Casa Taupe. Letting go of that comparison mentality was another mental hurdle to overcome. I realized that my journey is unique and it’s important not to get caught up in comparing myself to others.
My struggles mainly stemmed from the limitations I imposed on myself. Now that I’ve shed those self-imposed constraints, the real challenges will come as I start offering different services and continue to grow the Casa Taupe community. But I’m ready to face those hurdles head-on and push through to bring beautiful home styling options to all my home lovers.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I currently serve as a Design Consultant for a modern furniture and contemporary home decor brand, in addition to pursuing my passion as a personal home stylist. My dedication lies in providing an affordable yet sophisticated revamp for all home lovers seeking a conscious budget approach by creating design services. I firmly believe that creating an elegant, luxurious, and cozy home doesn’t require emptying your pockets.
My love for thrifting and exploring home decor department stores allows me to uncover hidden gems that can elevate any space without breaking the bank. It’s about finding those unique pieces that add character and style to a home, all while being mindful of budget constraints.
What makes me particularly proud is my ability to be a self-learner, effectively navigate social media platforms, and polish my interior styling skills. In the world of starting with no initial investment, being your cheerleader is crucial until recognition starts rolling in. I take on multiple roles to make it happen, ensuring my home brand gets the visibility it deserves. It’s a journey of passion, affordability, and the joy of transforming spaces, one thrifty find at a time.
Painting is another exciting hobby of mine, the white 3D canvas in the living room was made by me, Casa Taupe’s secret sauce.
What makes Casa Taupe different is the realness of its brand. No smoke and mirrors here—it’s all about keeping it honest and transparent throughout the process. Last year, I made a career switch without studying in between. It’s been a ride fueled by pure experience and an absolute love for crafting beautiful spaces. Casa Taupe’s key ingredient? It’s all about being genuine from the get-go.
Everything you see on my page is a result of a lifetime passion that I’m determined to strengthen as I go. It’s not just about creating good-looking spaces; it’s about sharing a true love for the art and fun of interior styling. While I’m on this self-learning journey, every move is about staying true and bringing beauty to every nook of Casa Taupe.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I believe that the desire for aesthetically pleasing and functional spaces has surged, especially with the rise of the work-from-home era. As people spend more time in their homes, the demand for creating inviting environments has grown. What excites me is the way this industry is expanding and becoming more accessible, irrespective of income status.
There’s a wave of creativity and excitement in DIY projects, from flipping old furniture to recreating inexpensive products to elevating rooms. It’s not just about following trends; it’s about making personal spaces uniquely comfortable and visually appealing for each individual. The possibilities are endless, and I’m thrilled to be part of an era where crafting a beautiful and functional home is both a desire and a tangible reality for many.
