Today we’d like to introduce you to Jodi Hammer.
Hi Jodi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been in the field of education for 38 years. I taught In both public and private schools and I’m a former Principal of American Heritage and ran the American Academy in Boca/Delray. When I got married my husband, at the time, convinced me to resign my position and start a Private Tutoring Company with him. Fast forward, we divorced when my daughters were 2 & 4. Financially, I was left with nothing. After losing my house & car, I had No choice but to sell most of my personal belongings in order to provide a roof over our heads and food in the table. I worked part time
at Pine Crest School and continued to tutor as many hours as I possibly could. My accountant told me I needed to incorporate myself for tax purposes. Fast forward, 18 years later, I’ve got 50 teachers/tutors on staff and a full time assistant .
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had no money to advertise, so I relied solely on word of mouth referrals. I sent emails to as many doctors and therapists in the area to inform them about my change in employment in the hopes they would refer clients to me. As I got busier, I asked another teacher friend if she wanted to tutor with/for me. My biggest problem was that all the referrals wanted only me as their tutor. Getting clients to trust me and my new “staff” was very challenging.
