Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Martinez.
Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Photography has been a lifelong passion of mine. Ever since I was a little girl, I always had a camera in my hand. I started off photographing the toys in my room and my little sister. I always had a camera in my hand on every family vacation or just for something fun we had planned for the weekend. The idea of freezing a moment in time made me feel like I had superpowers.
I took a few photography classes in high school, but I am basically self-taught. I always wanted to learn more and be strive to be better. Photography has always been such a huge part of who I am, and it became even more important to me when I had kids. I am so blessed that I have this gift. I am able to capture the sweetest pictures of my daughter and son that I will cherish forever. I am so honored to share this gift with clients, family, and friends.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t feel like anything in life can honestly be a “smooth road”, but I do believe photography has helped me with so many other struggles in my life. Photography has always been like my escape. It is a big stress reliever for me. When I am photographing my own children or a client, I forget about everything else. I forget about stress and focus on being in the moment.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a natural-light portrait and family photographer. What I love the most about my work is how I am able to capture such monumental moments in someone’s life. I photograph a lot of maternity sessions which then leads into newborn lifestyle sessions, milestone sessions, first birthday sessions, family sessions, etc. I get to watch families grow and it is truly special.
I think being a Kindergarten teacher as well truly sets me apart from others. I use my experience working with children and apply it during my sessions. I give children the freedom to be themselves- to explore, to laugh, and to let their personality shine. My clients truly appreciate my patience and my sense of calmness I have while working with children.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Social media has been a big help for me for networking. I have joined a lot of Facebook groups for photographers and have met a lot of other photographers this way. Being able to ask questions, get advice, and learn from others has been really beneficial.
