Conversations with Jean-Philippe Pasquier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean-Philippe Pasquier.

Jean-Philippe Pasquier

Hi Jean, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Similar to most people here, I am not originally from Miami. I was born in France, where I graduated in mechanical engineering. After gaining experience in both large and small companies, I eventually ventured into entrepreneurship and established my own business.

Seven years ago, my family and I relocated to Florida due to my wife’s career, prompting me to reevaluate my professional direction. I decided to transition away from industry-related jobs and embrace a more creative path. Starting in my garage, a quintessentially American setting, I delved into creating electronic goods, particularly clocks, and gained traction in the Miami area through word of mouth.

My journey as an artist unfolded when we moved to a new house with a large empty wall that seemed ideal for a TV. However, not being a fan of having a TV in the living room, I took matters into my own hands and crafted a 70” wooden piece depicting “305” and the Miami skyline.

Positive feedback from those who saw it sparked a realization that I might have stumbled upon an artistic talent. Initially dismissing the idea of being an artist, I created more pieces, participated in my first fair in 2022, and thus began my artistic journey.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was certainly a challenging journey, and even now, I face ongoing difficulties. However, I find immense joy in it, as the freedom of creative expression is truly incredible.

My initial hurdle was acknowledging my legitimacy as an artist and accepting that what I created was of value. Without a background in art education—my focus had been on mathematics and physics—I had to shift my mindset and recognize that the work of my mind and hands resonated with people.

Another significant challenge stems from my distance from the art world. Unfamiliar with its codes and business practices, I had to navigate the intricacies of art as a business, realizing that understanding its workings is crucial in this creative pursuit.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
All my artistic creations are crafted from various types of wood such as MDF, plywood, pine, bamboo… and acrylic paint. The majority of my pieces are three-dimensional, encouraging the viewer to become an integral part of the artwork; the perspective shift alters the perception. Shapes, shadows, colors, and reflections of colors serve as my distinctive signature.

The creative process starts on my computer, where I conceptualize and experiment with designs and colors. Subsequently, I employ various digital tools such as laser cutters, CNC routers, and 3D printers to bring my visions to life.

Categorized as “op-art” or “kinetic art,” my work draws inspiration from diverse sources. While my early exposure to museums and art fairs played a role, I also drew insights from masters like Carlos Cruz-Diez, Jesus Soto, and Yaacov Agam.

In the vibrant setting of Miami Art Week 2023, I showcased my artwork at Spectrum and was honored with the “Best Solo Exhibitor” award. Currently, I am gearing up for several exhibitions in and around Miami this winter, with an upcoming exhibition scheduled in Italy at Lake Como in June 2024.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Being a native French speaker (still grappling with English at times!), the majority of my reading and listening experiences are conducted in French. While in my studio, I immerse myself in music, particularly contemporary jazz and opera, or engage with podcasts spanning topics like politics and humor.

For learning purposes, I find immense value in Wikipedia. It holds the distinction of being the first app I downloaded on my smartphone, and it remains my go-to source for acquiring knowledge.
