Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Carlos Gonzalez Batista.
Hi Jean, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Well, I always have a thing with movies. I started studying Filmmaking at a small college in Puerto Rico Called CCAT. There I started practicing photography so I can open my eyes more to compositions it take me so many years to do. My passion for cinema started after I watch an Interstellar movie. I felt so different after I saw it if the first time and I said to myself that is what I want to do in movies like that.
I started taking pictures and videos for friends and local brands in Puerto Rico then I started collaborating W Mike Towers and I started working more w artists after that. Years later a friend showed my work to Zion and he gave me an opportunity to go on tour with him and Lennox. I was doing tours, managing both artist and personal pages, Shooting on them music videos BTS for them, and lifestyle pictures and videos.
After a while then I end my work with them looking for a refreshment and started working with Myke Towers Again. Shooting his tours and personal life 2 years later in the release of his second Album Easy Money Baby he gave me the opportunity to make the album cover. I was so excited. I know this was the beginning of something big for me and of course I was having the opportunity to show the world my talent. We shoot 2 concepts and the second one was the one that made it, the actual picture.
After that, the quarantine came and everything was shot down… and I have a lot of work coming and everything fall off. In the quarantine, I have the opportunity to direct some music videos for myke towers (Michael Myers, Michael X, and Llegara). At that moment my mind change I know that I can be doing bigger stuff than I was making and started doing work that only help me escalate to where I wanted to go. I did a couple of album covers later for Jon Z, Myke Towers again, Sahir, Russel & Joyce Santana.
Thru the years I started directing more music videos and commercials for artists like Arcangel, Sahir, myke towers,& Rauw Alejandro. At the moment I took most of last year off (2022) to find out more about myself and clarify my vision of what I want to project on my projects. It was a good decision tbh I feel so clear right now, learning thru every project, getting better every time, and most important thing I’m having so much fun w the process.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For me, life is like a video game. Every chapter you need to pass is harder than the last one. Even if you lose you should never hit the “QuitGame” option always the “TRY AGAIN”! Some of the struggles that I have are that almost always people underestimate me but I always prove them with my results.
Another thing is that most of the people that you have to work in the industry people don’t have a vision or want everything cheap. So there’s always a battle with these people to do projects that restrict you to do good stuff.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m A photographer Director, Writer, and creative director. At the moment starting my film production company “BADDCOMPANY”. I’m Known for taking pictures from different perspectives of people and artists in the videos and films that I make I always try my best to give them this ” movie ” look because that is what I want to make when I feel ready.
The thing that I’m most proud of myself and my work is that I always try to bring something fresh to the table and that I have done so much with so little!! I always try to bring something new to the table and avoid doing what is trending at the moment. I just follow my style and try to mix it with what the project needs.
