Conversations with Irkah Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Irkah Wilson.

Hi Irkah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Greetings! I’m Irkah, a multipotentialite on a journey of discovering music, art and all the other intricacies of life.

My art career started in prep school when the choirmaster at the time heard me sing and invited me to come and join the choir. My mom also enrolled me in piano and dance classes.

The art overall stayed with me throughout prep and high school (where I started playing Steelpan). When I was about to start college I decided to further pursue Steelpan and music overall at Edna Manley.

The rest is history: my classmates are now my colleagues in the professional world and I am now in a position to do what I love every day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a musician is roouugghhhh. I’m in a field where criticism and a bad mind meet me as I step through the door, especially as a woman. I am ‘competing’ with a billion others who all want to be stars, to have the greatest hit and the best-selling record.

To make it in music, you have to have links, know writers and producers, etc. Sadly, some (dare I say most) of these people don’t always have your best interest at heart: they’re selfish and predatory and some just don’t want to see you win.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a multipotentialite: I have many creative pursuits and passions. They mainly revolve around music and art in general. I am a musician and a pannist (I’m mostly known for playing Steelpan), and I’m a model, a content creator, an event curator, and a world traveler.

With my life, I aim to see how grand it gets and see the beauty in all that I do. My proudest moments include playing with RSI Steel – Jamaica’s Finest Steelpan Trio and traveling all around the world playing pan. What sets me apart is my instrument, the fact that I’m a visionary and my intuitiveness when it comes on to music and the music business.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see the industry being more receptive and loving towards women and people of all genders. I hope the Caribbean, especially artists from Jamaica, are highlighted even more and are seen on the largest stages and concerts.
