Today we’d like to introduce you to Gunnar Gill.
Hi Gunnar, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started with me being a teenager learning how to play drums and guitar at School Of Rock. Ever since I was baby boy I would have little song or melody ideas stuck in my head for years. But then I finally figured out how to bring them out of my head and make them come to life. I grew up with a very musical family with my dad being a DJ and my mom always singing and showing me her favorite music.
What really inspired me to make music was the rise of a genre called bedroom pop in 2018. I was always into pop punk and Metal, so I figured I could do the same thing, just making punk rock. I would write about personal experiences, relationships, and whatever else the basic bitches in the music industry right about.
When I first started, I wrote all of the music myself and tried to form a band called “C@bin M8s” (cabin mates). After about a year or 2 of doing that, no one would stay in the band for more than a few months. So I made the switch to being a solo artist since it was all just me anyways. And it wasn’t until I had established myself as a solo artist that I had found my band. I now write most of my music with some help from my friends, Hunter Angelson, and Jordan Bent. And our good friend Jake Ryan sometimes hops behind the drum set so I can be close to the audience.
Jordan was actually in C@bin M8s and we ended up having a huge fight that made us not friends for sometime. We’ve been friends since we were about 10 years old racing at Okeeheelee BMX track. Jake was also in cabin mates at one point as a drummer, but that was kind of weird for me because I wanted to be known as a drummer. I found Hunter from an old School Of Rock friend, and today we travel around Florida playing shows, making music, and making goofy ass videos.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Simple: lack of resources, lack of energy, and conflict between bandmates. We don’t always have the money to tour or even record music at the studio, which is why we resorted to recording in my bedroom. Life pulls us in so many directions, especially when you’re trying to be the best at what you do and you’re doing a lot of it. Being a human being and having emotions, you’re going to have conflict. You have to surround yourself with people that match your goals and energy. Not even to be successful, but to be happy and continue to love what you do.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
A lot of our new music is about being a better person, political issues and real life experiences. We want to push others to be the change that they want to see in this world by fighting for what they believe is right and not standing still in the middle of the chaos hoping for it to go away. We see people almost every single day complaining on social media about political issues, but are you going to stand up, go to your local council meetings, rally protest and fight for what you believe in? Same goes for you as a person. Are you going to choose to be a tumor, or are you going to be the cure?
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Being an artist or band you have to sacrifice money, energy, time, and sometimes your reputation. But I feel like that’s just a part of the job. If you are not willing to sacrifice these things, then being an artist or band is not for you.
