Today we’d like to introduce you to Dre Jackson
Hi Dre, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a Hampton University Graduate from Hampton, Virginia in Southern VA. I majored in Architectural Design & Urban Development. My story begins as an only son born into a family of women without any purpose-driven roles model in my life so I had to seek my role models out through my professors, friends and community leaders and people that inspired me through music, art & vlogging. They pushed me to maintain my dignity, business accumen, hustle and grit while working through university trying to get letters behind my name so I would have the foundation to build a legacy and build trust in business relationships.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing is ever really a smooth road. What I am learning now is, a lot of times it takes people seeing results before they actually have the faith to believe in what you’re building. Since building my own music and clothing brand, I’ve had challenges dealing with egos, racism and doubt from people who would rather not support my business endeavors, but watch from the sidelines. One thing I can’t stand is a non-supportive spectator. Thanks to social media there are so many of those nowadays.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Firstly, I’d say I am hyper-creative. Right now I run a Shopify store for a clothing brand called LUXBOY. It’s my baby right now. The main concept for the brand is “bet on yourself” ie the acronym “BOY” as this is the only way to find the true light you bring to the world (“LUX”). It’s a vibrant, hyper-urban streetwear brand that makes bold statements through recycled garment canvas art. Secondly, I’m most notably know for my basketball/fitness acumen here in Miami, the physical health & wellness capital of the world. People know I love fitness, as I believe challenging your body is one of the quickest ways to mental health solutions. What sets me apart from others is that I embrace peoples authenticity and my own. I think being authentic is so attractive. A lot of time we get in this head space where we think we need to prove ourselves to others when in reality caring about what others think only keeps you in bondage to their perceptions of you. When you’re authentic, your aura holds no bounds to anyone and has no limits.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck at all. I think everything you earn or work for is manifested through your actions. I follow this fitness influencer named Xiomara (@fitnesswithxiomara) and she has taught me not to believe in luck, as it’s a cop out to hope for better to come. Mind you, there is nothing wrong with hope, but everything you desire out of life can be achieved though calculated actions and planning. Luck is what people chalk it up to when they don’t see the behind the scenes work.
