Conversations with Dominique Dixon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Dixon.

Hi Dominique, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Content creating, was something I’ve always wanted to do, but never did because along with being shy I didn’t feel that I had much to talk about. But, eventually I focused more on how creating made me feel and it overshadowed my fear.

So I began filming things that I loved and knew would be easy to talk about. Those things were just my day to day, beauty routines and tips. My friends would always come to me for skin and beauty tips so I shared what I knew. I would get off work, and stay up late to record, edit or plan. (Truthfully, I still do)

Once I reached 300 followers, I landed my first 4 figure brand deal with a skincare brand I love and was also added onto their pr list.

And as cliche as it is, discipline and just using what you have is really all you need to get started because it doesn’t really mean you’ll stay there. I just kept the end result as my reminder.

Something I taught myself that helped me was to look at creating as a hobby, not a job. Content creating can be a job but if you take yourself too seriously too soon you’ll lose the joy in it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Having a dream and working towards it is never, ever easy, but always worth it. I would say the biggest struggle is seeing the vision through. Especially when the people around you may not understand it the way you do.

No one will ever feel the way you feel about what you’re passionate about and I humbly learned that very early on. That goes for both my graphic design career and creating content. It’s not an entirely negative thing though because you should always be more excited than anyone else about your goals.

There will be many times where you don’t really have the motivation or inspiration to continue, but that’s where you rely on your discipline. There will be times where you think no one is watching or no one’s noticed your work yet, but that’s when you remember your why. The most important thing you can do for your future self is remember what you set out to do and do it. That’s a promise you owe yourself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a graphic designer, and I work on corporate marketing materials. Having a career in graphic design was never really a lifelong plan, but rather something that came about very unexpectedly and quickly. I took graphic design as an elective in high school after not getting the one I really wanted. After, talking myself out of quitting the course I found myself being really drawn to it and made a vow to myself that this is what I’ll pursue when I got to college.

Eventually, I did and graduated with BFA in Graphic Design. I then went on to work a law firm and eventually I began running their social media accounts and creating a lot of content for them, which was a lot of fun and eventually moved on and obtained a position as a graphic designer on a more corporate level. So think business cards, banners, brochures, website assets, every and anything branding.

Something I’m most proud of is the ability to continue coming up with so many creative ideas everyday. It feels like an endless fountain and I think it’s almost comparable to a music artist who never runs out of things to write about. It also translates into how I create content. Even if it’s the same niche, I always have a new edit, angle, or style I’d like to try.

I would say not being afraid to try something new may set me apart. I think that’s something I picked up from my parents. If they have an idea they leap at the opportunity to act on it. I usually just keep my ideas to myself and try to execute them before I forget. When I’m creating, I don’t think there’s one thing that I feel is off limits for me.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was extremely shy. I was pretty nervous about making friends because I wasn’t sure how I’d be perceived. It wasn’t until I made friends that I was less introverted.

For the most part, I read a lot and I’ve always loved the arts. Whether it was music or fine arts like paintings, sculptures, photography, etc. I would doodle a lot, try to play piano, read and write. Basically anything that allowed me to just be while being alone is where you’d find me.

I’ve always had a laundry list of things I wanted to be when I grew up and being an artist was one of them. Although graphic designer/content creator wasn’t what I had in mind at the time, I don’t think I’ve strayed too far from the original plan!
