Conversations with Dizzy Smarp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dizzy Smarp.

Hi Dizzy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Title: Your new favorite reggaeton artist is from Bluefields ,Nicaragua:
Im a Miami based artist who was born and raised in the heart of the coast of Nicaragua,Bluefields a city filled with ethnic diversity and culture which played a key part in my musical background. Since 2021 I’ve been making music It first started as small freestyles I made for my cousin which back then was the person showing me how to rap, then i took it to school at my lunch break battling with my friends for our classmates and in 2022 it evolved into full songs I wrote with structures and hooks on a actual beat then release them to the rest of the world. Currently Im working on my first full body of work “Reggaekunt” a EP im working on with all of my closest friends to make inspired by all the genres that shaped me as the artist I am today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a small independent artist is never easy, it’s been times where i had no type of resources to make the quality of art I wanted and it was frustrating. Other than that it’s always a challenge to put yourself out there and putting things together when you’re the only one funding these projects that’s why it’s so important to find a community and creatives where you can all support each other.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make rap and reggaeton infused with a lot of caribbean and experimental elements I call it “Reggaekunt” a celebration of authenticity and culture while creating a safe space on the dance floors for everyone no matter who they present as or their preferences I just enjoy seeing people dancing to my music.

In my craft I’m always exploring afro-centered genres going from dancehall, reggae, reggaeton and afrobeats while giving it a twist of my own essence and energy. It’s always high level energy, filled confidence, and always a shoutout to my black and latino people and last but most important me blending my Nicaraguan culture with a lot of mainstream sounds.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
One of my favorite podcasts is Reggaeton con la gata the studying and history of reggaeton is so interesting and they do a great job educating the newer generations on how this genre was built.

Honestly as a artist in this present time being on social media is a must one of my favorite apps is TikTok has played a key part in building my following. Go post that TikTok and promote your art don’t be scared of looking crazy.

Unrelated but I love watching biology and evolution history videos
