Conversations with Desiree Velazco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Velazco.

Hi Desiree, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m originally from Venezuela and have always been passionate about design and creativity. I first studied architecture, which deeply influenced the way I see aesthetics, detail and design.
I learned how to crochet through a tutorial, and about a year later I decided to launch VELVET by Desi. It came so naturally to me that I’ve always felt I inherited that talent from my grandmother.
From the beginning, I wanted to create crochet swimwear that felt timeless, elevated and different from traditional crochet pieces. One of my biggest passions is making women feel beautiful, feminine and confident while enjoying the beach or simply relaxing under the sun.
Every piece is handmade with attention to detail, natural textures and effortless luxury, combining craftsmanship with refined design.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve had to completely redesign and refine my patterns over the years. After moving to a different country, I had to search for new materials and rebuild many of my designs from scratch, since every yarn and material behaves differently.
Through many tests, adjustments and a lot of trial and error, I slowly developed the product into what it is today.
Building VELVET by Desi has taught me that creating a brand takes much more than creativity, it takes patience, resilience and consistency. Every challenge along the way has helped me grow both personally and creatively

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in handmade crochet swimwear through VELVET by Desi, where every piece is entirely handmade by me with a strong focus on detail, comfort and elevated femininity.
What sets my work apart is my focus on creating crochet pieces that feel modern, sophisticated and wearable rather than overly traditional. I work with cotton-stretch materials that allow the skin to breathe while still providing support and comfort, helping women feel both comfortable and beautiful when wearing my pieces.
Another important part of my brand is the experience I give every client. I always want women to feel genuinely cared for and satisfied not only with the product itself, but also with the attention and experience they receive with the brand.
I think what I’m most proud of is being able to turn something I learned on my own into a brand with a clear identity and vision

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love how inspiring and creative Miami is. There’s such a strong mix of fashion, art, design and entrepreneurship, and I think that energy really motivates creatives and business owners to keep evolving and pushing their ideas further.
I also love the lifestyle and atmosphere: the beaches, the weather and the connection to coastal living naturally align with the aesthetic and feeling behind VELVET by Desi.
If I had to choose something I like least, I would probably say how fast-paced everything can feel at times, but I also think that energy keeps people inspired and motivated.
