Today we’d like to introduce you to Deana Romano.
Hi Deana, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started my social media journey around 2 1/2 years ago. I made an account to share/trade Rae Dunn ceramics that I was collecting at the time. At the time we were living in Ohio for ten months and transitioning back to moving to Florida. When we got back to Florida we started going to the parks again and doing things all around Orlando.
I started sharing those experiences on my feed and taught myself how to make reels. I was hoping to make a few friends to meet and go to the parks with. I really had no intention of becoming a creator but it just happened from creating reels every day. It’s turned into over 70,000 followers and I found a new passion.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never a smooth road for any journey. Social media is full of highs and lows. It’s filled with positive and negative experiences. I like to focus on the positive. I’ve always made myself vulnerable and have spoken out about body positivity, mental health, and other topics to show realness.
Sometimes the backlash from that can be a little harsh and putting yourself in a position to be judged is hard. People criticizing everything you do is hard some days but if I can just help one person then it’s worth it for me. I’ve learned that not everyone will like me and it’s okay. Focus on the people who do.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m really proud of the fact I’ve made thousands of videos and reels. I taught myself how to edit on YouTube and I’ve posted reels consistently every day for over 2 years. I rarely miss a day of posting a video. My feed is known for being bright, light-hearted, and fun.
It’s a safe space for others and that makes me happy to know I’ve built that. Just building a feed from scratch is a lot of work and I’ve posted almost 4,000 times. I don’t have an education in photography or videography and I’m proud of what I’ve learned so far.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I really like using Canva for media kits and creating graphics. I edit my photos in Lightroom. Most of the time for video editing I use Splice.
