Conversations with Consuelo Mora

Today we’d like to introduce you to Consuelo Mora

Hi Consuelo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Colombia and have a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, along with an MBA in Business Administration from Brazil. Currently, I work full-time as a marketing excecutive. My life has always been surrounded by graphic design, interior design, decor, paintings, and various forms of art. This environment has fueled my genuine passion for colors, textures, and forms.

I combine my love for marketing with my passion for art by creating, innovating, and making new abstract compositions in my free time. I enjoy fusing colors and textures in a way that complements each other without competing, achieving a balance that is the essence of design.

Throughout my life, I’ve relocated 17 times and lived in 5 different countries. These travels have allowed me to infuse my cultural knowledge and background into my paintings. Painting has been my constant companion, my hobby, my relaxation, and ultimately, my passion.

For me, art is a game, the best of hobbies. It’s like entering another dimension where I can play with colors, materials, and shapes, exploring designs and finishes for hours, escaping reality for that time. Each piece I create carries a hidden message of overcoming, happiness, harmony, and blessing. I hope my paintings bring joy, passion, and enthusiasm to your space, blessing it and bringing harmony to those who live there.

My work is driven by passion, expressed through forms, colors, and textures, aiming to brighten others’ lives. The experience of art affects our senses and explores our emotions, revealing new understandings of the world and ourselves. This is why art is indispensable. Engaging with art and the renewal of meanings it proposes leads us to re-evaluate the meanings we attribute to things. This enriches culture, brings new knowledge, offers solutions to problems, generates life, and surrounds us with happiness.

I have exhibited my work in many galleries throughout Colombia, Brazil, and the USA, specifically in Broward and Dade counties.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe that every path has its difficulties and hard processes. Despite my resilience and adaptability to different environments and cultures, I have found it challenging to learn different languages and feel comfortable expressing myself in them. Learning not only the culture but also how the system works in each country has been a significant hurdle.

Wherever I have arrived, we have often been on our own, making our way by ourselves, building contacts, friendships, and creating bonds. It is not easy to make yourself known when you come under these circumstances, without any connections or contacts to give you a hand. Everything depends on the hard and constant work that you do daily.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I find myself somewhere between the roles of an employee and an artist, as both are my passions. On one hand, I have been working in Marketing for over 20 years across various industries, including manufacturing, services, education, and currently, hospitality. I have built my career independently, securing positions through online applications. I am particularly proud of this achievement because, as an immigrant who did not study my career in this country, it is often challenging to find high-level positions without being transferred or having connections. I am grateful to the companies that have given me opportunities and trusted in my abilities.

On the other hand, I am also an artist, continually exhibiting my work and seeking new opportunities to showcase my art. I create everything from paintings and sculptures to decorative objects. I am very curious, and I think my art reflects that. I am always experimenting with new colors, techniques, textures, and finishes. I understand that every artist has their own signature, and sometimes you see the same painting from an artist but in different colors. I cannot do that; I need to change, to try new things, to feel through the pieces. I believe this makes me unique in some way.

What I am most proud of is the balance and equilibrium I have achieved in my life today. As an immigrant, I have managed to care for and support my family, be a dedicated housewife (married for almost 25 years) with two beautiful daughters, and maintain a professional career where I strive to give my best effort every day.

I also make time for sports, particularly pickleball, which I play at least four days a week with my husband. Additionally, I dedicate time to painting and personal development. I don’t know exactly what sets me apart from others, but my life motto, based on Colossians 3:23-24, guides all my actions: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human beings, knowing that the Lord will reward you with an inheritance. You serve Christ the Lord.” I strive to do everything with excellence, thanking God for every moment and giving my best.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The Covid-19 crisis reminded me of what is truly valuable in life. It highlighted how we often live in a constant rush, missing out on precious moments with our loved ones. I realized that in life, you have to be intentional. If you don’t intentionally dedicate time and effort to something, it tends to deteriorate naturally. This period showed me the importance of stopping, breathing, analyzing, and taking the time to admire, contemplate, and enjoy life. Even if we didn’t plan it, these moments of pause are extremely necessary and valuable.
