Conversations with Claudia Cubides

Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudia Cubides.

Hi Claudia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started playing music when I was 9 years old. I started playing the guitar, then I joined the vocal chorus of my school in 3rd grade. In sixth grade, I joined the music group of my school, playing the guitar as well. In 8th grade, I started playing the bass, but when I went to university, I joined the university band playing bongoes. After that, I moved to Los Angeles, California and took private classes with some teachers. It was in 2005 when I joined, as a percussionist, the two-time Grammy winner Mariachi Divas. A female band based in Los Angeles. We have done several tours over the last 8 years. I also did some tours with artists such as Christian Castro, Ana Barbara, Alicia Villarreal and Stevie B among others.
After that time, I moved to Miami and started playing with different local bands. Afterward, I met the medicine music world and I performed with some Music Medicine artists. Also, I play with Arianne in her kids’ academy named Little Sound Body.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road because percussion instruments are not easy for women since they are heavy to carry. Also, there is a lot of competition with other musicians. Also, making a living from music is not easy, but I did it in Los Angeles while playing in Mariachi Divas band.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I play percussion professionally. (Congas, bongoes, Cajon, etc.). I am known for winning an American Grammy Award with Mariachi Divas band a few years ago. I am proud because being a female percussionist is not easy and brings several challenges, as the competition in the field and getting a Grammy Award made me very proud.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My teacher, Gustavo Gonzalez from high school, has been my main mentor. He provided many musical influences that made me discover who I am in the music field. He got awarded a few years ago as best teacher of my country. Also, Mariachi Divas gave me eight years of experience by doing tours and performances all over the USA.
