Conversations with Alyssa Diaz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Diaz.

Hi Alyssa , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Photography has always been part of my story. When I was little, I dreamed of becoming a marine life photographer. My grandfather was a marine biologist & marine life photographer in the Florida Keys and also taught marine biology at Fort Lauderdale High School. Some of my earliest memories are sitting beside him looking through the photographs he had taken over the years. One summer, we even spent time scanning all of his physical prints into a digital archive. Today, some of his work is displayed in the marine biology labs at the University of Florida, which is incredibly special to me.

That love for photography truly started with him. When my dad got me my first camera, I brought it everywhere. My grandfather and I would go out together photographing nature because that was what he loved, and it became something we bonded over deeply. Around the age of 12, he gave me all of his old film cameras, flashes, and equipment. Pieces I still treasure today. Looking back, I think he saw my passion for photography long before I fully realized it myself.

As I got older, I naturally became the person friends and family asked to take photos for them. Before I ever considered photography professionally, I was constantly photographing my best friend’s family and capturing little moments for the people around me. Then, after becoming a mom myself, photography took on an even deeper meaning. I became obsessed with preserving every moment because life moves so quickly and children grow in the blink of an eye. Photography became my way of freezing time.

People constantly encouraged me to pursue it professionally, but for a long time, I doubted myself. In 2020, while my husband was deployed for 13 months, photography became my outlet and my comfort during a difficult season. I poured everything into learning, practicing, and finding my style. I photographed family, friends, my children, nieces, nephews. Anyone willing to step in front of my camera. During that time, I really discovered my love for storytelling through images and watched my style evolve naturally over time.

In early 2021, I finally took the leap and posted in local mom groups offering free model sessions so I could build my portfolio. I’m incredibly grateful that many of those first clients are still with me today. Years later, they continue to trust me with their milestones, memories, and most meaningful moments, and that loyalty means everything to me.

By spring of 2021, I officially started charging for sessions. I invested in styled shoots, mentorships, and continued education because I never wanted to stop growing. That fall, I hosted my first mini sessions, and my business truly began to take off. Soon after, I was able to invest in professional equipment and a few months later I photographed my first wedding, something that felt surreal at the time.

Since then, my business has continued to grow in ways I could have never imagined. What means the most to me is the trust people place in me. Knowing families think of me during some of the most important moments of their lives. Whether it’s welcoming a baby, celebrating a marriage, or simply capturing the beauty of everyday life, is something I never take for granted.

Photography is so much more than pictures to me. It’s preserving emotion, connection, and memories that deserve to live on forever. I will never stop learning, creating, or striving to give my clients the very best version of myself. I am endlessly grateful that something I love so deeply has become not only my career, but a way to serve others and preserve the moments that matter most.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road, but I think that’s true for any business built from passion and hard work. Photography is a constant learning experience. It’s a very relationship-based and word-of-mouth profession, so there are always going to be challenges, growing pains, and moments where you have to adapt. I’ve learned that you do your best, learn from every experience, and continue moving forward.

One of my biggest challenges actually had less to do with photography itself and more to do with balancing life outside of it. When my husband prepared to transition out of the military and pursue nursing school, I stepped into a full-time 9-to-5 job to help support our family during that season. Overnight, my schedule completely changed. I went from being able to shoot multiple days a week and spend hours editing and creating, to trying to balance work, motherhood, marriage, family life, and my business all at once.

There was a period in 2024 where I intentionally slowed down significantly because I needed to learn how to navigate that new balance. As much as I love photography, I also wanted to be present for my children and my family. That season taught me a lot about boundaries, balance, and avoiding burnout. It was important to me that even while my availability changed, my clients still received the same care, attention, and experience they had come to know from me.

At first, it was difficult. I had to restructure how I scheduled sessions, editing, and seasonal mini sessions so I didn’t overwhelm myself. But over time, I found a rhythm that worked for both my family and my business. By spring of 2025, I felt confident stepping fully back into photography again while still maintaining a healthier balance overall.

I think one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that success does not always mean constantly doing more. Sometimes it means slowing down, adjusting, and giving yourself grace during different seasons of life. Those challenges ultimately helped me grow not only as a business owner, but also as a person, wife, and mother. And through all of it, I’ve remained incredibly grateful for the clients who continued to support me and trust me through every stage of that journey.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a documentary-style wedding and motherhood lifestyle photographer based in South Florida, and at the heart of everything I do is storytelling. I often describe myself as a storyteller and memory keeper because photography, to me, is so much more than simply taking beautiful pictures. It’s about preserving real emotion, connection, and moments that deserve to live on for generations.

My style is often described as soft, timeless, romantic, and emotion-driven. I specialize in capturing the unscripted moments, the in-between glances, the laughter, the movement, the quiet emotion, and the little details people don’t even realize are important until years later. I want my clients to look back at their images 5, 10, or 20 years from now and feel exactly what that moment felt like.

One thing my clients consistently tell me is how comfortable I make them feel in front of the camera. So many people come into a session nervous or thinking they’re awkward in photos, and my goal is always to make it feel less like a photoshoot and more like spending time with a friend. I talk, joke, guide them naturally, and create an environment where they can simply be themselves. Some of the best moments happen when people forget the camera is even there.

I’m also incredibly proud of the relationships I’ve built through my business. Many of my clients return to me year after year for every chapter of their lives. From engagements, weddings, maternity, newborns, family milestones, and beyond. There’s something so special about being trusted to document those moments repeatedly. It’s a responsibility I never take lightly.

Another thing I pride myself on is delivering high-quality work while still maintaining a fast turnaround time. I know how excited people are to relive their moments, so I work hard to give my clients an experience that feels personal, seamless, and meaningful from beginning to end.

Professionally, being published five times has been an incredible honor, but what I’m most proud of is the impact my work has on the families and couples I photograph. Knowing that my images will someday be looked at by children, grandchildren, and future generations is something that deeply inspires me.

I think what truly sets me apart is the heart behind my work. I don’t aim for perfection, I aim for authenticity. Life is beautifully imperfect, and I want my images to reflect people exactly as they are: deeply loved, deeply connected, and fully present in their real moments.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think the photography industry is continuing to shift toward authenticity and storytelling rather than perfectly posed, overly curated images. People are craving real emotion and genuine connection more than ever before. Clients want photographs that truly feel like them. Moments that are raw, natural, and timeless rather than just following temporary trends. I believe documentary-style photography will continue growing because people want to remember how life actually felt in those moments.

I also think the industry will continue evolving heavily through social media and education. Photographers today are not only artists, but also educators, storytellers, and community builders. Over the next 5–10 years, I think we’ll continue seeing more collaboration within the industry through mentorships, workshops, styled shoots, and creative networking opportunities that help photographers grow together instead of viewing each other as competition.

Personally, I hope to transition back into full-time photography again in the future and continue expanding my business in new ways. One of my biggest dreams is to host mentorships, workshops, and styled shoots across the country where I can help inspire and educate other photographers while also continuing to grow creatively myself. Photography has given me so much, not only professionally, but personally, and I would love the opportunity to pour that knowledge and encouragement back into others who are beginning their own journeys.

No matter how much the industry changes, I think the heart behind photography will always remain the same: preserving people, stories, emotions, and moments that matter most.
