Conversations with Alex Turco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Turco

Hi Alex , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into art began at a very young age, thanks to my father, a photographer, who introduced me to the world of visual storytelling. Growing up surrounded by images, landscapes, and the raw beauty of nature inspired me to use art as a way to communicate with the world. Over time, I found my voice through the fusion of organic materials and contemporary techniques, creating pieces that are both immersive and tactile.
One of the pivotal moments in my career was when I moved to California, where I was deeply influenced by the diverse natural landscapes—from forests and deserts to oceans. This connection with nature fueled my desire to create art that brings the beauty of the natural world into people’s lives.
Today, I draw much of my inspiration from the island of Ibiza, which has become a central theme in my work. The rugged cliffs, serene beaches, and vibrant creative energy of the island have shaped the way I approach my craft, integrating natural elements like burnt wood, fossil logs, and salt blocks into my pieces. My goal is to create art that allows people to connect with nature on a deeper level, whether in public installations or intimate spaces.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where I am today has been anything but smooth. Like many artists, I faced challenges in establishing my career, from securing financial stability to gaining recognition in the competitive art world. Balancing the business aspects of being an artist—marketing, client services, and networking—was an ongoing struggle, but it was necessary to sustain my creative practice.
One of the more personal struggles has been the challenge of remaining authentic to my artistic vision while navigating commercial demands. Ensuring that my work stays true to its core themes of nature and organic beauty, while still appealing to a broader audience, requires constant introspection and balance.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in creating large-scale installations and pieces that merge natural materials with modern techniques. My work is known for its use of organic elements like wood, fossilized materials, and resin, often creating immersive experiences that invite viewers to engage with the tactile qualities of the natural world. What sets my work apart is this blending of textures and materials—like salt blocks reflecting the salt flats of Ibiza or burnt wood representing resilience and transformation.
What I am most proud of is how my art resonates with people on a sensory level. I aim to create pieces that evoke an emotional response, encouraging mindfulness and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of nature. Each project is a personal tribute to the environments that inspire me, and seeing others connect with these elements is truly rewarding.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid-19 crisis has reinforced the importance of adaptability, both in life and in art. As exhibitions and installations were delayed or canceled, I focused more on the emotional aspects of my work. It became clear how vital nature and creativity are to human well-being, especially during times of isolation and uncertainty. The crisis reminded me that art is not just a visual experience but a way to bring people together, even from a distance.
