Today we’d like to introduce you to Toni Cooper.
Hi Toni, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In August of 2013, I started uL as a hashtag. I was homeless, confused, and in the midst of one of the darkest times of my life. At the time, all I remember caring about was my image and making sure that my circumstances weren’t visible in my outward appearance. From the clothes I wore to the smile I plastered on my face; I was masking pain from my everyday life that I didn’t know how to deal with. My pain started at a young age after watching my mother struggle and constantly be dealt hands in life that she didn’t deserve. My pain continued through the trauma of being sexually assaulted throughout my early childhood and adolescence. My pain resurfaced again in 2019 when I lost my brother, number one supporter, and biggest inspiration, Austin Skii Mask Tony Infrared Starks Cooper. But despite all the pain I’ve been through in my life, it is all a part of my testimony and what has shaped me into the person I am today. While I have never been fond of speaking on my life experiences or childhood traumas, as I develop into the black lesbian woman I am, I have realized that speaking out can help someone else who is afraid and could be going through the same thing. I want to relate to everyone because we have all experienced the ugly side of life and though, at times, it may be hard to see the light, overcoming the ugliness is what shapes us into the beautiful people we are and strive to be. My brand, uL, stands for “ugly life.” This is simply for those who came from nothing and want it all. Those who didn’t let the hard times define them or stop their ultimate purpose in life. I initially refrained from explaining the meaning of the brand because I hated the privileged responses that I often received, but to those who understood and loved it, just know you motivated me to go harder. To you all, I want to say thank you for seeing the vision in what was once words coming out of my mouth to tangible pieces on your body. You are appreciated. In support of me and the brand, I want you all to hashtag #uL whether you’ve mentally or physically been through some ugly times and to continue to love all people no matter their circumstances or lifestyle choices.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There is always opportunity for growth. I have definitely experienced some struggles but it is all a part of the journey.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My main focus is uL at the moment. In my free time I love to take photos and DJ for fun. Depends on who you’re asking when it comes to what I’m known for. I feel like a lot of my family and friends know I’m a multi-faceted being. I’m proud of myself no matter the circumstances. I have overcome every obstacle in my path.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My mother. To start honestly, she’s one of my number 1 supporters. My friends Eathyn, Darwin, Ed, Nya, and plenty more have put up with all of my questions and doubts of my designs I have come up with. Amanda, my girlfriend, has also helped me along this path with her amazing advice.
