Today we’d like to introduce you to May Alvarez.
May, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since I was a kid, I’ve always explored different restaurants with my parents. Every weekend we would try something new, whether close or far. So, in essence, my parents are foodies! Fast forward to 20 years (now, I feel old), I started a Yelp account and became Yelp elite when I was in college. Once I graduated college and started working full-time, I didn’t have the same amount of time to write reviews. Every review would take me 15-20 minutes to write, with an average of four businesses per week – I’d be writing reviews for more than an hour. Due to not having enough time, I stopped writing on Yelp. For the next year, I started posting my food and event pictures on my personal IG account; that’s when I realized the amount of content I had! So, I started thinking of ways to be involved in the community, where I felt free to post whatever I wanted, when I wanted, and be myself 100%. That’s when @mayitakeabite started; March 22, 2017, was my first post. I always post items that I enjoy, and been truthful to my followers. I am super Miami, and I love my city. Which is why my focus on my page are local businesses; there’s nothing like supporting our community. I have met so many people, and been offered different opportunities through @mayitakeabite, I really find it to be a blessing. Thank you universe!
Has it been a smooth road?
I, fortunately, have had a pretty smooth road. I post what I enjoy and write what I feel, so there’s nothing that I regret. For anyone who is trying to get into blogging on IG; be yourself, be honest, have patience, and have fun! Trust me, it’ll be one of the most fun experiences you’ll ever have!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I focus on promoting local businesses in South Florida, no matter the cuisine. I am known as #avocadogirl – I love avocados. My first default on IG was the avocado Bitmoji, that’s how the nickname #avocadogirl began. It’s come to the point where I have my followers sending me pictures and memes that are avocado related, to let me know that those pictures reminded them of me. It’s fantastic!
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
Fellow Miami bloggers, both in food and craft beer, inspire me to do better. There’s always something to learn from others!
