Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuliia Kononova.
Hi Yuliia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m Yuliia Kononova, founder of JK Accounting Group Corp., a tax advisory firm serving small and mid-sized businesses. I moved to the United States from Ukraine in 2014 and began my career as a corporate accountant, where I spent more than eight years building a strong foundation in financial operations, reporting, and compliance.
In 2019, I started JK Accounting Group after noticing a pattern I kept seeing with business owners: many had booming, growing companies but didn’t truly know or understand their numbers—just a gut feeling that they were doing well. I wanted to give entrepreneurs clarity and a proactive plan, not just paperwork at the end of the year. Since then, we’ve helped hundreds of businesses simplify bookkeeping, optimize tax strategy, and use their financials to make confident decisions.
A major turning point came in 2023. By then, I had outgrown a one-person business—demand was rising, and I realized the only way to keep service quality high was to build a team and a firm, not just “Yuliia.” That same year, I earned my Enrolled Agent license and became a Main Street Certified Tax Advisor. Today, I lead a team of five serving 100+ clients across industries, with a 98% retention rate and about 95% of new clients coming through referrals.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Another challenge that people don’t always talk about is how lonely entrepreneurship can be—especially in a technical field like taxes. In corporate, you’re surrounded by colleagues and mentors, and when something complex comes up you can brainstorm, ask questions, and pressure-test an answer as a team. As a business owner, many of those decisions sit on your shoulders alone, and in complex tax situations it can feel like there’s no one to consult with in the moment.
That’s why finding the right professional community became so important for me. I’m incredibly grateful to have found the Main Street tax community through Mark Kohler and the Main Street Tax Network. Being part of that network has made a huge difference—not only in navigating challenging tax questions, but also in the business-building side of entrepreneurship. It’s reassuring to know I have a community around me and trusted people to learn from and lean on.
As you know, we’re big fans of JK Accounting Group Corp. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We at JK Accounting Group Corp. are a tax advisory firm that helps small and mid-sized business owners stay compliant, reduce tax liabilities through strategic planning, and gain real insight into their numbers. We support clients with bookkeeping and ongoing financial guidance, but our core focus is proactive tax strategy—helping business owners make decisions throughout the year that impact what they keep at the end of the year.
There are many aspects to proactive tax strategy and when proving a service we can be proud of, we ought to make sure we advise our clients in all of them, that includes business structuring, compliance planning, and guidance around wealth-building strategies, including retirement accounts and real estate-related tax considerations.
What sets us apart is that we are not a “once-a-year” accounting firm. We build long-term partnerships by getting to know our clients personally and staying involved as their business evolves. We communicate year-round, translate complex rules into clear actions, and help clients feel confident—not overwhelmed—by the financial side of their business.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust we’ve earned: we have a 98% retention rate, most of our growth is referral-based (about 95%), and many of our monthly clients stay with us for years. To me, that speaks to the quality of our work and the strength of the relationships we build.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success for me is when our clients feel confident and in control of their financial decisions—not just “hoping” things are fine. It’s seeing a business owner go from guessing to knowing: clean numbers, a proactive tax plan, and clear next steps.
It’s also success when we build long-term partnerships and deliver consistently year after year. Our retention and referral rates matter to me because they reflect trust, relationships, and real impact—not just growth for the sake of growth.
And personally, success is building something sustainable: a firm that isn’t dependent on me alone, a strong team that shares the same standards, and a supportive professional community around us—so we can keep improving and serving at a high level.
