Today we’d like to introduce you to Yaolen Bolanos.
Hi Yaolen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my medical journey in Cuba, where I completed most of my training before life circumstances led me to leave during my fifth year of medical school. Determined to continue forward, I restarted my studies in Costa Rica, where I earned the title of Doctor in Medicine and Surgery.
I later continued my professional development in the United States at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where I focused on Internal Medicine and strengthened my clinical foundation. Since 2009, I have had the privilege of caring for patients across Pembroke Pines and the Broward area, building lasting relationships based on trust, accessibility, and continuity of care.
I am deeply compassionate and truly involved in my patients’ lives, not just medically, but personally. I believe in knowing my patients beyond their diagnoses, understanding their families, their challenges, and their goals, so I can provide care that is both clinically sound and emotionally supportive. My approach to medicine is relationship-based, preventive, and centered on treating the whole person.
In 2024, I opened my own medical practice to bring this vision of personalized, attentive healthcare to life. I was honored to receive the award for Best Concierge Medicine Practice in Pembroke Pines, recognizing my dedication to a more human, connected, and proactive model of care.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Leaving my home country to pursue medicine was one of the hardest experiences of my life. When I emigrated, I had already invested years into my education, my dreams, and my identity as a future physician. Walking away from that in my fifth year of medical school meant starting over emotionally, academically, and professionally. I had to adapt to a new culture, a new system, and the uncertainty that comes with being far from family and everything familiar.
In Costa Rica, I made the difficult decision to begin again from the very start. It required humility, resilience, and a deep belief in my calling to become a physician. I studied tirelessly, learned to navigate a different educational structure, and pushed through the emotional weight of rebuilding a life while pursuing a demanding career. That chapter shaped my discipline and strengthened my compassion, because I understood what it means to struggle and still move forward.
Starting over again in the United States brought a new set of challenges. A new language environment, new licensing pathways, new expectations, and the pressure to prove myself in a highly competitive healthcare system. Training at Jackson Memorial Hospital was both an honor and a test of endurance. Every step required persistence, long hours, and the willingness to keep learning and adapting.
Living and training in two different countries taught me flexibility, cultural sensitivity, and empathy at a profound level. I know what it feels like to be the one navigating an unfamiliar system and that experience deeply influences how I care for my patients today. It made me not only a stronger physician, but a more compassionate human being.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
