Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Seward
Hi Tyler, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Tyler Seward, founder of The Life Play, started out like many others, as an athlete playing football, track & field, baseball, and basketball. From an early age, he was known primarily as an athlete, a label that would prove to be both a blessing and a curse. He began playing high-level basketball before middle school, and with that, the pressure to perform quickly arose. In high school, Seward was a point guard, leading his team to a state championship and an undefeated season as a sophomore. However, few knew he was fighting a mental battle on and off the court, unable to reach his full potential despite his success.
As his high school years went on and the reality of not receiving a Division I basketball scholarship set in, his confidence plummeted, and feelings of worthlessness grew. These emotional struggles manifested physically through panic attacks and muscle stiffness, all while he continued to play the sport he loved. At the time, he had no understanding of what was happening in his mind or body until he sought help from a licensed mental health counselor. This life-changing experience allowed him to observe his thoughts without judgment for the first time.
Reflecting on his journey, Seward realized that while people are taught many things in school, sports, and society, emotional intelligence is often neglected. Ironically, mindset is what separates good performers from great ones, and what fosters growth. After emerging from his own mental struggles, he became determined to help others do the same.
Seward, now a graduate of Florida International University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, is pursuing a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Barry University. His mission is to be the mentor he wished he had growing up—someone who guides both kids and adults through the complexities of mental health. Through The Life Play, Seward and his team teach people crucial mental skills to improve well-being and build mental strength in the face of adversity. By promoting mental well-being, he aims to prevent others from suffering as he and many others have. Whether in sports, performing arts, business, or at home, individuals face daily pressure to perform, often without prioritizing their mental health. Through The Life Play and vulnerable conversations, Seward thrives to change the negative stigma around mental health, and change the world for the better. With more self-aware and empathic people apart of teams and society, the world will be an overall happier place.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some struggles along the way have been just the amount of time it takes to run a company, editing clips, podcasts, etc. I personally, Tyler Seward do everything from life coaching to personal training to planning events, to running events, to advertisement, to customer outreach, to editing social media content. It’s been a slow fine tuning process for us, so not as many challenges yet.
We’ve been impressed with The Life Play, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
