Today we’d like to introduce you to Tancred Vilucchi.
Hi Tancred, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into design was never simply about creating beautiful spaces. From an early age, I was drawn to the way certain places could make us feel. Some spaces have the ability to calm us, inspire us, or create a lasting memory without us fully understanding why. That invisible quality has fascinated me for as long as I can remember.
I was fortunate to grow up surrounded by craftsmanship and construction. Those experiences taught me not only to appreciate beauty, but also to understand how it is built. Over the years, that foundation evolved into more than two decades of experience in interior design and high-precision construction, allowing me to develop a holistic approach where creativity and execution are inseparable.
A defining moment in my life came in 2016, when I left France and moved to Miami. I arrived knowing very few people and without an established network. Like many entrepreneurs, I had to start from scratch and build my path one relationship, one opportunity, and one project at a time. Those early years taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of believing in a vision long before others can see it.
In 2018, I relocated to Los Angeles, where I continued developing my practice and expanding my international perspective. Living and working between Europe and the United States exposed me to different ways of experiencing luxury, hospitality, and the art of living. Those influences continue to shape every project I undertake today.
What began as a personal leap of faith eventually evolved into Maison Vilucchi, an international interior design studio with offices in Los Angeles and Paris, serving private residential and hospitality clients around the world.
Today, I focus on creating what I describe as atmospheres rather than simply interiors. I believe true luxury is not defined by excess, but by harmony, authenticity, comfort, and emotion. Every material, proportion, texture, and detail contributes to an experience that should feel timeless and deeply personal.
Whether designing a private residence or a hospitality project, my goal remains the same: to create places that are not only beautiful to look at, but meaningful to inhabit. Spaces that are remembered long after one has left them.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like many entrepreneurs and creatives, my journey has been marked by periods of uncertainty. Building a business in the world of luxury design requires patience, resilience, and a long-term vision. There were moments when opportunities seemed distant, when projects took longer than expected to materialize, and when I had to rely more on conviction than certainty.
One of the most significant challenges was moving to the United States as an immigrant and building a life and career from the ground up. When I arrived in Miami in 2016, I had no established network and no guarantees. Everything had to be earned through persistence, hard work, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty.
Beyond the professional challenges, there were also the realities of navigating the immigration process while simultaneously growing a business. It was a demanding journey that required patience and perseverance. After years of dedication, obtaining my Green Card became more than an administrative milestone—it represented the culmination of a chapter defined by determination, sacrifice, and belief in a vision.
Another challenge has been remaining faithful to my philosophy in an increasingly fast-paced world. It can be tempting to follow trends or pursue growth at any cost, but I have always believed that meaningful work is built over time. Developing a distinctive voice, earning trust, and creating projects that genuinely resonate with people cannot be rushed.
Working internationally has also required constant adaptation. Every country, culture, and project comes with different expectations and ways of working. Rather than seeing those differences as obstacles, I learned to view them as opportunities to listen, evolve, and expand my perspective.
Looking back, I realize that the most valuable lessons did not come from success alone. They came from the moments that required perseverance, self-reflection, and the willingness to continue moving forward even when the path was not entirely clear. Those experiences shaped both the person and the designer I am today.
I often say that conviction is more powerful than hope. Hope waits; conviction moves. Throughout my career, it has been that conviction—the belief in a vision and the determination to pursue it—that has carried me through every challenge and ultimately allowed Maison Vilucchi to grow into the international practice it is today.
We’ve been impressed with Maison Vilucchi, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At its core, my work is about creating atmosphere.
While I am often introduced as an interior designer, I have never viewed design as simply the selection of furniture, materials, or finishes. What interests me most is the emotional experience a space creates and the way it influences how we feel, live, and connect with our surroundings.
Through Maison Vilucchi, I design private residences and hospitality environments with a focus on timelessness, authenticity, and sensory harmony. Every project begins by understanding not only the architecture itself, but also the people who will inhabit it and the story the space is meant to tell.
My background in both design and construction allows me to approach projects from a unique perspective. I believe the most successful interiors emerge when creativity and execution work hand in hand. A beautiful idea is only meaningful if it can be translated into reality with precision and integrity.
I am particularly drawn to projects that celebrate craftsmanship, local culture, and a strong sense of place. Whether working on a residence in Los Angeles, a hospitality project in Morocco, or a private retreat elsewhere in the world, I seek to create spaces that feel deeply connected to their environment while remaining elegant and enduring.
Luxury, to me, is not about excess. It is about balance, comfort, attention to detail, and the creation of experiences that feel effortless. The finest spaces are often the ones that leave a lasting impression without demanding attention.
Ultimately, my work is guided by a simple objective: to create places that people remember not only for how they looked, but for how they made them feel.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up in France in an environment where craftsmanship, construction, and creativity were part of everyday life. Looking back, I realize how much those early experiences influenced the person I would become.
From a young age, I was fascinated by the process of making things. I was drawn not only to the finished result, but also to the countless details, skills, and hands required to bring an idea into reality. Whether it was architecture, craftsmanship, or design, I developed a deep appreciation for the discipline and dedication that lie behind beautiful work.
At the same time, I was always curious about the emotional side of places. Some homes, hotels, and spaces seemed to possess an atmosphere that could not be explained by aesthetics alone. Even before I had the words to describe it, I was intrigued by the way environments could influence our emotions, memories, and sense of well-being.
Growing up in Europe also exposed me to a rich cultural heritage. History, architecture, art, and craftsmanship were not distant concepts—they were woven into daily life. Those influences helped shape my appreciation for timeless beauty, proportion, and authenticity.
Perhaps most importantly, I learned the value of perseverance. The people around me understood that meaningful things are built over time and that excellence is rarely the result of shortcuts. That lesson has stayed with me throughout my life and continues to guide both my personal and professional journey.
When I look at Maison Vilucchi today, I can see many of those early influences reflected in the work: a respect for craftsmanship, a pursuit of elegance, an attention to detail, and a belief that the spaces we create have the power to enrich the way we live.
