Community Highlights: Meet Susan Block of Coral Springs Counseling Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Block.

Susan Block, LMFT has a thriving online marriage therapy practice in South Florida. Her group practice specializes in marriage and couples therapy as well as working with adult individuals who are struggling in their lives & in their relationships.

Susan started her private therapy practice in 2011 and has built what is now South Florida’s go-to online group practice. Her team of specialists offers state-of-the-art marriage and couples therapy which spans the entire state of Florida focusing on South Florida including Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami Dade County.

Susan began her lifelong dream of owning and operating a private therapy practice back in 2011. Long before the dream was a reality, Susan was always the “go-to” for advice even as a kid. Susan was born in New York and moved to South Florida after her parent’s divorce. Susan always knew she had a love for helping people. As a shy and awkward teen, Susan found herself in a therapist’s office.

Just like most kids, at first, she resisted. As time went on, Susan saw the benefits of therapy and soon discovered she wanted to help others as a profession. In college, Susan took a different path & eventually became an elementary school teacher in Broward County. Although Susan loved her students, she knew she climbed the wrong career ladder. Something was missing.

While teaching, she pursued her master’s degree at Nova Southeastern University. After finishing the program, Susan put therapy on the back burner and continued teaching. Then, in 2011, Susan’s world came crashing down. She suffered the unthinkable loss of late-term pregnancy. She was devastated. Her world shook and she was no longer able to continue a career that wasn’t fulfilling. One morning as Susan was walking her dog as she always did, she was hit with a sudden bolt of clarity.

She knew at that moment she always had a calling to be a therapist in private practice and this was the time. The door of opportunity opened and Susan jumped in. Having no idea where to begin, Susan started researching, making connections, and one phone call, one email, one idea led to more and more doors opening. It was almost as if the universe was like finally girl you’re here. This is where you belong.

Since then, Susan has continued growing her therapy practice by offering mental health services within the South Florida community. Susan quickly realized she had a passion for assisting couples through the darkest times in their relationships. In some ways her specialty found her. Fast forward to today, Susan has built a reputation as one of the leading marriage therapists in the South Florida area.

Susan has realized she has a special gift. Some people can sing, and some are great athletes, Susan’s gift is her ability to help create a paradigm shift in people’s lives. In 2022, Susan quickly realized more and more people were in need, she was unable to keep up with the demand for couples therapy and wanted to continue offering counseling services on a larger scale.

That’s when she knew it was time to expand from a solo practice to an online group practice. Susan and her team of therapists are truly passionate about helping couples and adult individuals through their darkest times and now can cast a wider net of support and services to residents in South Florida and across the entire state who are struggling.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A smooth road? Absolutely not! Starting a private practice while working as a full-time school teacher was not easy! Since I put my therapy career on the back burner for a few years, I was rusty. I had to dust off my old textbooks, had to reconnect with friends and professors from graduate school that I hadn’t spoken to in years.

I was also starting my private practice journey from ground zero and was unsure where to begin. I had limited time, just suffered a tragic loss and trying to do it all on a shoestring budget. With all those obstacles in my way, I pushed through. Again, the path was wide open, I just needed the courage to begin. That’s how much I knew I was heading in the right direction. It felt great even though it was really difficult.

I think that’s part of what makes me a great therapist today. It’s what makes me a great mentor for the clinicians in my group practice. I stay humble. Although it wasn’t always easy, I’m proud of my past, proud that I took the leap of faith which was scary.

Just like a GPS system, sometimes it reroutes you, but if you know where you’re going, you adjust. You trust the journey, and you try not to get too ahead of yourself.
