Community Highlights: Meet Sierra Balgar of City Girls Golf

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Balgar

Sierra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started City Girls Golf because I wanted to change the face of the golf scene. I’m Sierra Balgar, a 26-year-old from Harlem, and I discovered my love for golf in my early twenties. As I got more involved in the sport, I noticed a lack of diversity that often made me feel out of place. To address this, I launched City Girls Golf, a community dedicated to introducing women of color to golf. In just a year, we’ve gained over 70,000 followers and received the “Winning 10” award from Black Sports Biz.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our main challenge came when we unexpectedly went viral. Within a month, we gained 10,000 followers. In the beginning, it was hard to manage our quickly growing community. Our rapid success also drew criticism from some dedicated golfers who questioned our legitimacy. Nevertheless, despite these hurdles, City Girls Golf managed to introduce the game of golf to over 2,000 women successfully.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
City Girls Golf, founded by me at the age of 26, has spearheaded a nationwide movement in golf. As an authentic brand, we prioritize inclusivity, setting us apart from others in the industry. Our offerings include beginner-friendly golf clinics, as well as golf trips and social events, catering to a diverse community of golf enthusiasts. We take pride in our commitment to making golf accessible and enjoyable for all, creating a welcoming environment where everyone can feel empowered to pursue their passion for the game.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
We want to extend our gratitude to the incredible community of women who have supported City Girls Golf from the very beginning. Without their support, we wouldn’t have reached where we are today. We also want to acknowledge the golf course instructors who have created safe and welcoming environments for our group to thrive in. Their dedication has been instrumental in our journey.
