Community Highlights: Meet Richart Ruddie of Captain Compliance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Richart Ruddie

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I built my last startup with a few hundred dollars of startup capital and grew it to a multi-million dollar business within the first year. Thanks to ingenuity, grit, and being a missionary with my work ethic we were able to build a successful company from the ground up from day 1. One of the services we offered was data privacy removal. Whats that? It’s where we would remove your personal information that appeared online. So if you Juan Garcia and Googled Juan Garcia Miami and wanted to remove your home address we would facilitate that in order to help protect our clients privacy. When I learned about the data privacy industry as it relates not to removal of individuals personal information on Google but rather helping companies oblige by data privacy frameworks my eyes opened up to an opportunity that is intensely growing in popularity at the moment and has great potential. Next thing I noticed was consent banners popping up everywhere and headline fines that were impossible to ignore with such big dollar signs. What happened next was an exit and sale of my last startup and the best investment you can make which is one in yourself with a true belief in myself and the startup of building out Captain Compliance a new best in class company in the Data Privacy and Compliance space financed out of my last ventures sale in the profile defender space.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building out the team has been an arduous task but a very enjoyable one. I interview and talk with every potential hire. There are numerous sites that I tried such as dice.com for coders, zip recruiter, Indeed.com, Angel List Talent (now called Wellfound), TheLadders.com, YPO Job Board, Startup.jobs, the professional privacy industries job board, and Linkedin. The result from this HR exercise was that I got over 200 candidates from all over the world that I had the pleasure of interviewing and talking to. Putting in the time to learn about every candidates strong skills and specialties ended up leading to a few new opportunities that were not initially expected. It taught me about the different skill sets that we could leverage in the compliance industry and I ended up inadvertently creating a global network of compliance experts who offer different skill sets that appeal to a global audience.

The time it took to craft all the ads, review resumes, set up interviews, and follow ups was a full time job in of itself but it was extremely important that I speak with and get to know all of the applicants especially at such an early stage of building out a new startup that has such a multi-billion dollar potential.

I have a relentless work ethic and have such high expectations for everybody in life that I help propel others get onto my level versus me going down to theirs.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Somebody asked me the other day when I was at Matheson Hammock Park in South Miami what I like to do for fun. Building companies is my happy thing to do and given privacy services are industry agnostic it lets me learn about businesses of all different niches and sizes. Outside of work spending time with my family, working on my longevity practices, reading books, learning about new things or people, playing tennis, and traveling as an adventurer not a vacationer make me happy.
