Today we’d like to introduce you to Paulette Isaac.
Hi Paulette, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After becoming a mom at a young age, my aspirations to become a physician was put on hold. While my intended career path changed, I maintained an interest in health and wellness. Having to care for my young children, I sought a career that had flexible hours and low overhead costs, and one that I would truly enjoy. Then came my eureka moment – massage therapy! I enrolled in a program and took classes at night, while I worked full-time during the day. In 2004, I successfully completed the program and obtained my license and board certification.
I began working in a few spas, but I knew I wanted to run my own business. So, a few years later, I established My Massage Retreat, LLC, a mobile massage company. Gaining and maintaining clientele was a challenge for the first couple of years, so in the interim, I went back to school to earn a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Health Science, and I landed a position as a massage therapy and health science instructor at my alma mater, Miami Dade College. I am currently pursuing my Doctorate’s in Educational Leadership.
Over the past two years, the COVID-19 pandemic unexpectedly caused a surge in my clientele, which I am grateful for. I am a proud massage therapist and a health educator. My mission is to provide wellness and therapeutic massage for the people in my community, to educate them on health disparities and the benefits of massage therapy, and to garner their trust and respect for the field of massage therapy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Gaining and maintaining clientele has been a challenge for some time, as my services are cash-based and are not a high commodity in my area.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The impact that my business had, resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, was contrary to what I expected. In my field, social distancing is not possible, so I assumed that the field of massage therapy was doomed. To my surprise, it was the complete opposite. People were more stressed than ever before and needed massage.
