Community Highlights: Meet Marvin “hakim” Lyons of TheeUrbanChef

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marvin “hakim” Lyons

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always has a passion for cooking, But my life changed when I Met my best friend wedding planner. She came up to our suite the day of the welding I was preparing breakfast. She asked for a steak and I prepared it for her. She took one bite and dropped the fork and just stared at me. Of course I was puzzled, In my head “man I put to much salt”….
But that wasn’t the case. She told me that was the best steak she ever had and I need to open a Resturant’, or work in one. For me I was always against working in the back of the house. I really don’t like how some workers get treated back there.
Then she said what about becoming a private chef…. And I will be the first to book you. That was the day TheeUrbanChef brand was born.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In business there is never a smooth road. So I launch the private chef business and quickly realized you need word of mouth, A Instagram full of pictures won’t get you booked.

people needed to taste my food. So I started selling plates. Although I sold out most of the time the money wasn’t there, but the promotion was the key and it worked out.
