Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Rosso.
Hi Jorge, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was a baby when I started my Architecture and Interior Design Practice! I took the leap far too young I think, but without risk there’s no reward, so I have not looked back. That was almost 30 years ago and I am still going! I cut my teeth with masters like Peter Moor and Alison Spear in Vero Beach and Miami respectively after graduating Tulane University and decided that I wanted to be on my own and contribute to the city that I have called home for 40 years plus.
Having moved from Puerto Rico as a young boy, and attended Gulliver for my entire formative years, I feel like I am more Miami than anything else. Even after some time away, I was always clear I wanted to return home to the city. I got the privilege of seeing Miami grow, change, and flourish into the multicultural metropolis it is now.
The city’s vibrancy really informs my design work since there is so much to pull from now and so much available to us. Luckily my clients share the same sensibilities and through word of mouth and lots of hard work, along with some luck, I have built a boutique practice that caters to people who share the same ethos I do.
It is a pleasure to get up every morning and start my day knowing that my clients all understand the work we are doing and respect that through design you can really enhance your life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Um….. COVID? The 2008 Real Estate Crash. There are always times when people are holding back from expenses which can be considered luxuries.
Nothing is ever smooth or linear, but it is in change that we are able to grow, and learn. If you take everything as a learning experience, you are always better able to weather a storm.
The key has been to align with clients who want to work with you and realize that they cannot afford to skip the designer. We keep projects on track, budget, and within the parameters of the clients vision. Ultimately avoiding costly mistakes by utilizing our experience and expertise.
Once I learned that part of the job is meeting and overcoming challenges, and not just design challenges, these started to smooth themselves out on their own….
Every job comes with struggles. How we overcome them is what sets us apart from the others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a boutique firm that has carved a niche for individualized attention to every client. No design problem too big or too small! Specializing in high end residential design and understanding the challenges and parameters of older homes we are able to advise clients in a way that best suits their needs. I would say that in Miami, renovations to existing homes are about 90% of our business and something we really do very well. Understanding where to put a client’s budget, how to work with their existing pieces, or the existing characteristics of their home allows for creation of a cohesive and beautiful project that reflects the owners and their lifestyle.
How do you define success?
Success is not what people think it is. Miami has become a bit flashy and money driven, but to me that is not what spells success. Success is a job well done, a client who is happy with their space and whose trust you have worked hard to earn. Success is a nice recommendation, or slow and sustained growth with blood sweat and tears. It is one happy client at a time!
