Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer & Thomas Finn.
Hi Jennifer & Thomas, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We purchased Six Tables in January of 2020.
We met in 2004, at Jonathan’s Landing Gold Club in Jupiter, Florida. Tom was the executive sous chef for the club, and he worked there for 13 years. I only worked there for 1 year, and then moved onto The Breakers in Palm Beach, where I moved up the ranks until I was the Area Chef for the Kravis Center. I worked at The Breakers for 12 years.
In 2017, we decided to move to Indianapolis, which is where my family is. We lived there for nearly 3 years, and decided that we wanted to run a restaurant of our own.
We searched all over the country for different restaurant opportunities to buy. We finally decided to purchase Six Tables because it was in the same county and area of the country where we already understood the dining scene. It made the most sense logistically.
So we moved down the first of the year in 2020, and purchased the restaurant on January 15. We had 8 glorious weeks of booming business, before the restaurant was forced to close down due to Covid. It was a rough time, but we both knew that if the government allowed us to open, then we could be successful. Once we were finally allowed to reopen, Tom and I did everything ourselves. We cooked everything, cleaned, served, washed dishes; we had no employees. By keeping our overhead low, we were able to squeak by that first year. And then as word got out about us, business kept coming in.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
it has not. Owning a business is a new level of stress. Add to that, moving across the country, setting up an apartment, getting the kids into schools, learning the specific needs of the individual business, and then Covid. All we could do was put our heads down and keep working through everything. All of our hard work eventually paid off in the end, and we’ve built a business that we’re proud of.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Six Tables. a Restaurant?
We are a small restaurant that offers one seating for dinner service. We’re open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for regular dining. But we also open up on our closed nights for groups of 6 or more.
We serve a set menu, starting with plated hors d’ouevres and a glass of sparkling wine. The next course is soup; we always offer lobster bisque, and then switch the vegetarian soup seasonally. We then move onto a seasonal salad, followed by a house-made sorbet intermezzo. For entree, we have 5 options: Tenderloin of Beef, Rack of Lamb, Braised Beef Short Ribs, Duck Breast, and our Fresh Catch of the Day. And then we have three desserts to choose from. We always offer Apple Pie, and then the other two choices change seasonally.
We also have a full wine list, available by both the bottle and the glass. We offer a couple of beers, as well as soda, tea, etc.
How do you define success?
To me, success is being able to make a living doing something that makes you happy. That’s not to say that it won’t be hard, but that all the work is worth it. You can pour yourself into something, and you’re happy with the results, and so are your customers.
But it’s also having the freedom & autonomy to do things on your own terms. I’m so happy that our customers trust us to make there special nights out even more special, and that they choose to celebrate with us.
