Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Seward.
Hi Jeff, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my career as a sales engineer for one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of commercial kitchen ventilation systems, CaptiveAire. In the early days, I was literally pounding the pavement—sometimes visiting the same client ten times before finally earning their business. That persistence paid off. From 2000 to 2007, I became the company’s top regional sales manager, building a $5 million annual book of business.
In 2007, I decided to take the leap and start my own manufacturing and installation company—Advanced Hood Systems—focused on producing commercial kitchen ventilation and exhaust systems. Over the years, we became one of the largest distributors of CaptiveAire and expanded to offer full-service kitchen ventilation solutions, including installation, service, and fire suppression. Today, we have three locations across Florida and a team of over 100 employees serving clients throughout the Southeast and Caribbean.
As the pandemic slowed restaurant projects in 2020, I didn’t step away—I simply used the slower season to move forward with a new idea. With people spending more time outdoors, I saw an opportunity to create high-quality, American-made marine and outdoor products. That’s how SeaWard Systems was born—designing and manufacturing fish cleaning stations, rod storage, dock accessories, and custom outdoor pieces. Later, I expanded into JTS Outdoor, focusing on furniture and fire tables that complete the backyard experience. All products are built in our South Florida facility and engineered to last, blending creativity with technical precision to elevate life outdoors.
Beyond business, I also founded Ocean Ridge, a nonprofit dedicated to cleaning up Florida’s waterways. I launched it a few years ago after getting tired of seeing trash piling up in our canals and along the coast. Instead of complaining, I jumped in my boat and started cleaning it up. Now my kids have taken the torch—spending their time out on the water hunting down debris. Even without really pushing the mission yet, Ocean Ridge has already collected nearly 3,500 pounds of trash from Florida’s waterways. It’s a 100% volunteer-driven effort, and every dollar donated goes straight toward protecting and restoring the ocean.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting and running a business is never easy. While some growth happens organically, most progress demands hard work, focus, and relentless drive. Today’s market is full of challenges—from lingering supply chain issues (though not as severe as during the pandemic) to the ongoing struggle of finding reliable, dedicated team members. Add in the daily hurdles like machinery breakdowns, software glitches, and countless unexpected setbacks, and it’s clear that running a business takes constant effort. Yet, those very challenges are what make it exciting. Being an entrepreneur means facing obstacles head-on and finding creative, resourceful ways to overcome them every single day.

How do you define success?
The definition of success varies from person to person. Some measure it by the title they hold, the revenue they generate, or the market share they command. The real success comes when those individuals build meaningful careers, support their families, and grow both personally and professionally.
