Community Highlights: Meet Jean And Luz Roa of ROA Custom Woodwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean And Luz Roa

Hi Jean and Luz, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
JEAN ROA, OWNER AND FOUNDER OF ROA CUSTOM WOODWORK.

I started my career as a woodworker at the age of 16 in Venezuela, my birth country, working alongside my father and grandfather in our family company dedicated to handcrafted woodwork and upholstery. My entire childhood was spent in a carpentry shop, and growing up in this environment allowed me to acquire extensive knowledge, talent, and passion for both woodwork and upholstery.

In 2007, I decided to open my own business, “Muebles ROA” primarily focused on furniture manufacturing for some of the largest and most renowned furniture stores in the country. By 2016, my company was well-positioned in the Venezuelan market, but opportunities for further local growth were limited.

So, in 2017, with my wife’s support, we decided to take our business to the next level and we opened ROA Custom Woodwork in Miami. Since then, we have experienced success and expansion. We have dedicated ourselves to investing in the business, from studying the market and developing a differentiated concept and strategy to building a team with more than 40 employees who are now part of the ROA family.

LUZ ROA, OWNER AND CO-FOUNDER OF ROA CUSTOM WOODWORK.

During my childhood, I had the opportunity to closely observe my parents’ professions: my mother, an administrator who dedicated over 20 years to work for prestigious banks in Venezuela, and my father, a commercial announcer who was prominent in the media during the 90s.

With my mom, I learned about organization. I remember watching her plan and organize schedules, documents, and presentations every day, delegating activities to each member of her team. On the other hand, with my dad, I learned about advertising and marketing. I remember accompanying him to recording studios, where I witnessed live broadcasts and saw him share ideas with his colleagues, analyze audience preferences, review statistics, create strategies to captivate viewers, and evaluate results.

Growing up immersed in both professional worlds sparked my interest in studying Industrial Relations—a field through which I could further develop many of the skills I had learned from them as a child.

Years later, in 2003, I met my husband, Jean Roa. In 2007, he had the vision to independently establish his own company, utilizing the knowledge and experience he had gained from his father and grandfather. Since then, we have worked together to grow the business. With the opportunity to establish our company in the United States, we have doubled our efforts since 2017 to fulfill our common vision: to create one of the best woodwork companies in the US.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
During the pandemic, we faced one of the most challenging times. With issues in the supply chain and people in quarantine, fulfilling our contracted orders became quite difficult. However, thanks to the collaboration of our allied suppliers and the commitment of each of our workers, we managed to make everything work. We had to adapt part of our facilities to create safe conditions that complied with social distancing and health protocols, establish special work schedules to limit the number of people in the shop, and develop new strategies to attend to clients and supervise projects through video calls. Despite the difficulties, we found a way to keep production going, thanks to the commitment of each of our workers and the understanding of our valued clients.

We’ve been impressed with ROA Custom Woodwork, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
ROA Custom Woodwork is a family-owned manufacturing company focused on creating woodwork and upholstery pieces that combine aesthetics and functionality. All our products are custom-made and manufactured in the USA to the highest quality standards.

Our expansive facility, covering over 60,000 square feet, houses several essential departments for executing each project, including woodworking, upholstery, stone, painting, and metal. This makes us an attractive option for designers and developers, as we are equipped to handle complete projects, meeting all requirements in one place. We serve not only residential projects but also luxury commercial and marine, giving ROA the opportunity to be at the forefront of the industry.

Our pieces result from a combination of exclusive designs and high-quality materials, satisfying even the most demanding styles. The three key elements that have always distinguished ROA are: the customization of pieces, the use of high-end materials, and excellent customer service.

QUOTE: “In every piece of fine woodwork, there is a blend of artistry and craftsmanship that transforms nature into elegance.” — ROA®

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to us is bringing to life the vision each client has for their dream spaces with the highest quality.

Unlike many existing brands, at ROA®, we don’t just offer products that look good on the outside; we provide items that are truly high-quality inside and built to last. ROA® is a registered brand synonymous with luxury and quality.

We also value each of our clients, so our second pillar is customer service. Ensuring that every client feels at home and confident with us is essential. We want each client fondly remember the ROA experience even after completing their project.
