Community Highlights: Meet Isabelle Vladoiu of US Institute of Diplomacy and Human Rights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabelle Vladoiu.

Isabelle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Born and raised in post-communist Romania, a country in Eastern Europe, I witnessed firsthand the remnants of a nation recovering from a repressive regime.

Raised by my grandparents, I learned to tread carefully and not speak ill of the government. The stories I heard painted a vivid picture of the injustices that occurred, from friends’ fathers being imprisoned simply because of their long hair to churches being moved to hinder religious freedom. In a land where oranges were considered a luxury, I dreamed of a world where basic human rights were upheld.

In 2015, I made the life-changing decision to immigrate to the United States. Seeking new opportunities and the chance to make a difference, I set foot on American soil. With unwavering determination, I enrolled in the University of Buffalo Law School, pursuing my Master of Laws degree. Little did I know that this would be the catalyst for my extraordinary journey.

In 2016, just two years into my studies, I was selected to represent the United States at the International Human Rights Summit held at the United Nations. This opportunity ignited a passion within me to raise awareness and educate others about human rights. Fueled by this newfound purpose, I dedicated myself to advocating for justice and equality.

In a remarkably short period, my efforts caught the attention of prominent figures, from the Mayor of Buffalo to state senators and the Governor of New York. In 2018, I was honored to receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award and a gold medal from President Trump, recognizing my commitment to serving others.

Recognizing the demand for expertise in human rights, I founded the US Institute of Diplomacy and Human Rights. This organization quickly became a global standard for human rights education and diplomacy certifications. Through this platform, I have trained over 15,000 individuals in various aspects of human rights, including education, human trafficking prevention, DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), and global security.

My dedication to making the world a better place extends beyond borders. I have partnered with esteemed international organizations such as the United Nations, UNESCO, and the Organization of American States. Together, we have tackled critical issues surrounding sustainability, security, human rights, and diplomacy, fostering meaningful dialogue and collaborative solutions.

Not content with these achievements alone, I embarked on another remarkable journey—motherhood. As a first-time mom, I have experienced the joys and challenges of raising a child while simultaneously pursuing my passion. Even amidst the demands of motherhood, I published two best-selling books and expanded the reach of my organization into 60 countries. This feat, alongside pursuing my Ph.D. in Global Security at the American Military University, is a testament to the strength and determination of moms everywhere.

Today, I stand proud as an International Human Rights Law Specialist, an author, an advocate, and a loving mother. My work has been recognized and appreciated by two American Presidents, as well as by governors, senators, representatives, and esteemed organizations. I have been bestowed with awards and accolades, including the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award presented by President Biden in 2022.

As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities I have been given and the support of my loved ones. I continue to travel the world at the request of governments and charities, implementing effective human rights education programs and promoting positive change. Through my unwavering belief in humanity and peace, I strive to leave a lasting impact, ensuring that future generations inherit a world where human rights are cherished, and justice prevails.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road for me at all. Imagine moving to a whole different continent with just two suitcases, leaving behind everything I knew and loved. I didn’t have any friends or family there to support me as I pursued my career in law. It was a challenging and sometimes lonely experience, but I knew deep down that it was necessary to chase my dreams in the field of law and human rights.

You see, I had spent my entire life training to become a lawyer. I studied diligently and even took the bar exam, but something inside me felt incomplete. I realized that my true purpose lay in dedicating my life to serving others and educating them about their rights. It was a tough decision to make, to veer off the conventional path and follow my heart’s calling. But I knew that making a difference and empowering people was what truly mattered to me.

And just when I thought I was making progress, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. It was a devastating blow and forced me to adapt quickly to the changing circumstances. Yet, I didn’t let it stop me. It only fueled my determination to expand my organization’s reach and impact. I took the setback as an opportunity to find new and innovative ways to educate and support people in over 60 countries.

Let me tell you, it hasn’t been easy. There were times when I felt overwhelmed and doubted myself. But I held on to my vision of a world where everyone knows their rights and can stand up for themselves. With the support of like-minded individuals and my unwavering belief in the power of education, I overcame those struggles and made significant strides in my mission.

I want you to know that every challenge I faced, every hurdle I had to overcome, only made me stronger and more determined. I am a firm believer that setbacks are not roadblocks but opportunities for growth and innovation. Through it all, I’ve remained committed to my vision of a more just and equitable society, where human rights are respected and protected for all.

So, yes, my journey has been filled with challenges, but I am proud of how far I’ve come. I may not have passed the bar, but I’ve certainly taken the bar exam. And I’ve discovered my true calling in life, to be a voice for those who are voiceless, to educate and empower others to stand up for their rights.

As I look ahead, I am excited about what the future holds. I am a first-time mom now, juggling the responsibilities of motherhood alongside my career. It hasn’t been easy, but I believe that moms are superheroes, capable of incredible things. During this time, I managed to publish two bestselling books, expand my organization to 60 countries, and even pursue my Ph.D. I want to show the world that it’s possible to balance multiple roles and still make a significant impact.

My journey has taught me that perseverance, passion, and unwavering belief in the power of humanity can lead to remarkable achievements. I am just one person, but I am determined to make a difference, one step at a time.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was a determined and curious individual. Being raised by my grandparents instilled in me the value of education and the importance of hard work.

They emphasized that my path to a better life was through studying and acquiring knowledge. Moving to the capital city of my country to attend law school was a significant turning point in my life. It was a period of transformation and growth as I immersed myself in the study of law. I dedicated myself to my studies, eager to absorb as much knowledge as possible and excel in my chosen field.

Throughout this time, my passion for human rights and advocacy began to blossom. I realized that my true calling was not just in practicing law but in using my knowledge and expertise to serve others. It became clear to me that I wanted to contribute to the advancement of human rights and make a meaningful impact on a global scale.

These early experiences shaped my personality and fueled my drive to become an International Human Rights Law Specialist. They laid the foundation for my unwavering commitment to promoting justice, equality, and human rights for all.
