Community Highlights: Meet Eva Bryant of Therapy With a Purpose and Diva in Session

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Bryant.

Hi Eva, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Initially when I went off to college, the thought of becoming a therapist never crossed my mind. Like any other Haitian kid, I was convinced by my parents that I wanted to be a doctor. I laugh about this every time I think about it. I realized very quickly that pre-med was not for me! I ended up taking a psychology class, and instantly, the light bulb came on. Everything began to make sense, I made so many connections from my past, relationships and behaviors. I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I immediately changed my major to psychology. I fell in love with every aspect of it, I knew this was my purpose in life! I completed my bachelor of science in psychology at the illustrious Florida A&M University, go Rattlers! From that point, I knew I wanted to continue my education to become a therapist, but I never imagined I would be where I am today! I earned my Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University.

I had a vision, but God showed me there was so much more! I went from being a mental health tech to a case manager to a group facilitator to a therapist to a public speaker to a business owner and then a Clinical director! As much as I envisioned becoming a therapist, I did not foresee becoming a public speaker, a business owner, or even a clinical director!

In 2019, I launched my therapy platform Diva In Session which is a mental health initiative focused on normalizing therapy and mental health awareness in our community. Outside of actual therapy services, I enjoy sharing therapeutic knowledge about mental health. This joy is what brought me into public speaking, I was invited on different platforms to share therapeutic gems. In doing this, I met so many people who started inquiring about therapy services. At this time, I worked for a company and did not see others aside from the company. The thought started to cross my mind, could I really start my own practice?

I let the thought linger for another year due to nothing but fear of the unknown. What if it fails? What if it doesn’t work out? Am I good enough? The imposter syndrome was at an all-time high! In 2021 I finally decided I would make it official! Thus, Therapy With a Purpose was created! I named my business Therapy With a Purpose because being a therapist is my purpose and it should be done with purpose! The more I tested my potential, the more I thrived! I became alive! Still working a full-time job as a therapist, I was approached about becoming a Clinical Director.

Initially, I wasn’t interested because this was something that I never actually thought of, but then I thought about all of the other things that I never thought of that I ended up thriving at. I passed up the first opportunity to become a Clinical director. The second time, it passed me up. The third time, well you know what they say about the third time! It was a charm! I became the clinical director of a major company! I once again thrived! I faced challenges I never thought I would face, every challenged experienced in this position contributed to my growth in my other positions. I literally started from the ground up. I must admit, every step in this journey prepared me for the therapist/clinical director/business owner I am today. I am much more patient, reflective and forward-thinking.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Of course not! There were many times I questioned if I was making the right decision and if I was even capable of the responsibilities I was tasked with. I was exposed to people who weren’t as genuine and kind and that alone was disappointing and hard for me to deal with. I also struggled on finding a healthy balance between being a wife, mother and therapist.

I take being a Licensed therapist very serious and I am always thinking about how my actions and decisions affect those I service in every capacity. I find myself reflecting on how effective I am and how I can be better all of the time. This sometimes causes a delay in progression, but I never stay there! I give myself time to feel whatever I feel, and then I remind myself that I am more than capable!

Although I went through the growing pains of learning that some people weren’t as genuine as I thought them to be, I also encountered beautiful souls who helped me grow stronger and still have faith that Good outweighs evil!

I also had to address how this played a part in me being a wife and a mother. For many years I struggled with the thought of being a wife and a mother affecting my abilities as a therapist. I would always try to do it all. A doting wife, active parent and an effective therapist. This balancing act was far from easy and weighed heavy on my conscious. I wanted to be a good mother, a good wife and a good therapist. I constantly asked myself, why do I have to choose? Fortunately, I didn’t have to choose. I was blessed with a husband who saw my potential and nurtured my growth! Through each pregnancy of which none was easy, and raising our children, my husband stepped into any and every role I needed him in to make sure I was successful with my goals. We now have four beautiful children. Even when I struggled with putting my career on hold (2019-2021, my Irish twins) to carry and birth my last two children who were 13 months apart, he loved on me even harder. He watched me grieve my career and me fighting not wanting my only identity to be being a mother. I wanted more for my life, I wanted more for my children, he wanted more for my life!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Through Therapy With a Purpose LLC (TWP) I offer individual, couples and family therapy. My targeted audience is women, children and men between the ages of 13 and up. I am well versed in CBT, DBT, EMDR, Motivational interviewing and mindfulness approaches. I have experience helping individuals who are struggling with depression, trauma, addiction, anxiety, and stress-related to their career, relationship, family, and personal development.

My role as a therapist is to focus on developing a level of trust with the client and to provide support and empathy to encourage the client to feel safe in expressing his/her problems and symptoms. Encourage the client to describe his/her past experiences with their presenting problem and their impact on functioning while assessing clients needs. I provide purposeful therapy, therapy that targets specific problems and how to work through those problems. My goal is to assist clients with understanding and processing their thoughts and feelings to increase their quality of life and decrease trauma, stress, or anxiety. I assist clients with implementing skills to re-invest in their lives so they have what it takes to gain a sense of well-being. Better decisions are made when one is able to process and understand what they’re feeling and experiencing.

Diva in Session

Diva in Session was created to normalize and spread awareness about mental health and to diminish the stigmas that continue to create a barrier between those in need and them seeking help. I use Instagram and Facebook to post content related to mental health education.

I also network and engage in different public speaking events to spread education about mental health. I believe in the importance of the continued growth and exposure of the mental health field. A lot of people suffered in silence due to the negative stigmas placed on mental illness’.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years? I honestly don’t know. Not that I’m not optimistic, but God always seems to have more in store for me. The vision I have right now does not compare to what I know he will do for me. The direction I continue to move in is growth, exposure, and creativity.
