Community Highlights: Meet Erika Soza Mejia of Concept 2 Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Soza Mejia.

Hi Erika, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my career nearly 20 years ago in New York City after graduating from Parsons. My first role was at a high-end residential interior design firm in Manhattan, where I gained invaluable experience. In 2008, my husband and I relocated back to Miami—my hometown—after several years in the NY-NJ area. Once home, I joined a European cabinetry company, designing kitchens, bathrooms, and closets while quietly laying the groundwork for what would become Concept 2 Design. A few years later, I took the leap to focus on the firm full time. Over the past 16 years (we’re celebrating our sweet sixteen this November!), I’ve built more than a business—I’ve cultivated a process that blends creativity, functionality, and a high-touch experience tailored to each client. What began at a desk in my bedroom has grown into a full-service design studio in Davie with a dedicated team of six.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been anything but a smooth ride. I never set out to be a business owner—I always imagined myself working for a design firm. But after the 2008 financial crisis, jobs were scarce, and I found myself needing to create my own opportunity. I started posting my services on Craigslist (that’s how we did things back then!) and Houzz, hoping someone would take a chance. Eventually, one client did—and that single project led to dozens of referrals. To this day, many of our clients can be traced back to that one person who believed in me early on.

Of course, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Running a business is a whole different skill set—one they don’t teach in design school. Learning to lead, manage operations, and grow a team of designers has stretched me in ways I never expected, but it’s also been one of the most rewarding parts of this path.

We’ve been impressed with Concept 2 Design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a residential interior design firm and specialize in crafting elevated, livable interiors that reflect the soul of the architecture and the lifestyle of those who inhabit it. From reviewing architectural plans to final styling, we partner with our clients to create homes that feel curated, cohesive, and deeply personal.

I am most proud of the trust that our clients place in us to help shape their most personal spaces. The relationships we’ve built are the heart of our work.

We offer full service interior design for new construction and renovation projects. Full Service Design is about giving clients peace of mind while we do what we do best. They can trust us to manage the big picture and the smallest details so the result feels seamless, effortless, and truly special. Whether building a new home, renovating a current one, or completely redesigning the interiors, our team will handle it all.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My dad worked as an electrician for an electrical company, and on Saturdays sometimes he would take me to work with him. I loved being in those big empty houses that were under construction imagining what they would look like.
