Today, we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Koury.
Hi Elizabeth, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After a whirlwind of life changes, career, health, relocation, etc. I found myself living in Miami Beach. After months of making my Lebanese grandmother’s Za’atar spice mix as a hobby, I leaned into demand and created a business.
Hence, Rhus was born, and it was in Miami, where I’d spent most of my time, that I found the perfect co-packer. The beach, constant warm weather, friendly locals, and diverse food scene continue to inspire me.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It has been a great challenge but a welcome one. I gave up my prior career to navigate this unknown path. I have made many mistakes at varying prices, but with those came lessons.
Learning new things, challenging myself, and pushing the boundaries on what I am comfortable with will inspire me and drive me to wake up each morning! I have gained new tools for communicating with various industry professionals and negotiating pricing and deadlines. I do not see this changing as Rhus grows.
As you know, we’re big fans of Rhus. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
I’m Elizabeth Koury, the founder of Rhus. Learned the art of Lebanese cooking from my grandmother, whose za’atar blend inspired me to share my passion through food. Missing those unique flavors after moving away from family, I was inspired to launch Rhus.
Rhus specializes in Lebanese spice blends, and we are launching condiments soon. We take pride in creating blends without filters, additives, or shortcuts. We are thrilled to share our family’s spice blends and Lebanese heritage with the community.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Covid-19 showed me that we can only control so much, and when things are out of our control, it is up to us to adapt and make the most of that. I now see limitations as opportunities to seek a new path and pivot to make it work. I have become much more optimistic in my approach to business, relationships, health, and lifestyle in general.
As difficult and detrimental as COVID-19 has been on our world, it also allowed for opportunity in other areas, which I choose to see while acknowledging and honoring the damage.
