Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Rachna Buxani-Mirpuri of Buxani Counseling Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Rachna Buxani-Mirpuri.

Hi Dr. Buxani-Mirpuri, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I actually started as a one-person practice. It was only me and I did it all from seeing clients to billing to managing scheduling. In about three years, I hired my first therapist and then the next…..and the rest is history. I am originally from Dubai which is where my journey began. I headed 21 schools as a counseling coordinator of Gems group – a group that owned and managed 21 schools around the UAE. I then moved to the Cayman Islands where I worked with the Government and finally moved to Miami with my family.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the biggest struggle has always been the stigma attached to mental health and navigating that. I have always believed that stigma comes from a place of ignorance, so along the way, I have tried to educate people with regards to mental health issues so as to eradicate the stigma attached.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Buxani Counseling Care is a mental health practice in the charming city of Pinecrest in Florida. We provide mental health therapy to adults and teens. I think what sets us apart is that every member of the Buxani Care family is passionate about wanting to make a difference. We go above and beyond to ensure all our clients are taken care of. There is no email or phone call that goes unanswered. Even if we cannot assist someone due to our heavy waitlists, we ensure we provide callers with resources to support their mental health journey.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I think as therapists, we are not really business people. We are not taught the business of therapy in school. I wish I had a mentor to guide me when I was first starting my business journey. My advice to someone starting off is to partner with someone in private practice to learn the technicalities of starting up and building their own practice.
