Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Desiree Barrionuevo.
Hi Dr. Desiree, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My path into the mental health field was shaped by a deep interest in human connection, emotional development, and the ways relationships influence how people experience themselves and the world around them. Over time, that interest, along with my personal experiences, evolved into a passion for helping people navigate difficult moments with greater clarity, self-awareness, and support. As a therapist, I noticed that many people were searching for a space where they could feel genuinely understood without judgment or pressure to have everything figured out. That realization became the foundation for creating Serenity Collaborative Therapy. This practice is centered on meaningful connection, emotional growth, and collaborative support through seasons of life. I primarily work with adolescents, young adults, couples, and families experiencing concerns related to anxiety, relationship difficulties, family conflict, life transitions, grief, and personal growth. The goal has always been to create an environment that feels modern, approachable, and grounded in collaboration, while still providing high-quality, compassionate care.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like many small business owners, there have definitely been challenges along the way. Building a private practice requires wearing many hats at once, including business owner, marketer, administrator, and therapist, often all in the same day. Learning how to balance the clinical side of the work with the operational side of running a business was a major adjustment. Over time, I have created a healthier work-life balance that allows me to be fully present with both clients and loved ones. Another part of the journey has been navigating the emotional weight that naturally comes with this field. Supporting people through vulnerable and sometimes painful experiences is incredibly meaningful, but it also requires intentional boundaries, ongoing growth, and self-awareness as a clinician. There has also been a learning curve in building a brand that feels both professional and deeply human. Mental health spaces can sometimes feel overly clinical or impersonal, so it was important to create something that felt warm, sophisticated, and relatable. After four years in business, every experience along the way has helped shape the practice into something more intentional and aligned with its mission of helping people reach their breakthroughs.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Serenity Collaborative Therapy is a mental health practice focused on helping adolescents, young adults, couples, and families navigate emotional and relational challenges in a supportive, collaborative environment. The practice offers individual, couples, and family therapy in Plantation, Florida as well as online. Speciality areas include anxiety, depression, life transitions, personal growth, relationship difficulties, family conflict, grief, and loss. One of the things that sets the practice apart is its emphasis on connection and emotional insight. Therapy is not approached as simply “fixing problems,” but rather as creating space for people to understand themselves better, strengthen relationships, and develop healthier ways of coping and communicating. Brand-wise, I am most proud of creating a space that feels approachable and modern while still maintaining depth and professionalism. From the collaborative therapeutic approach to the overall client experience, the intention has always been for people to feel seen, safe, and comfortable reaching out for support. Mental health care can feel intimidating for many people, so creating a practice that feels welcoming, genuine, and emotionally safe has always been most important.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was very observant and emotionally attuned to the people around me. I have always been naturally curious about relationships, communication, and understanding why people think and feel the way they do. I was someone who valued meaningful conversations and tended to be the person others came to for support or simply a listening ear. I also had a strong interest in personal growth, creativity, and authentic connection with others, and those qualities naturally carried over into the work I do today. Looking back, many of the traits that shaped me growing up, such as empathy, curiosity, sensitivity, and a desire to help people feel understood, are the same qualities that continue to guide me both personally and professionally.
