Community Highlights: Meet Deena Werde of Dr Deena Werde, MD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deena Werde.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From early on, I knew I wanted to pursue functional and integrative medicine. I was fascinated by the idea that the body has an incredible ability to heal when given the right environment, nutrition, lifestyle, and support, and I wanted to understand that process through a rigorous, science-based lens. I’ve always believed there is value in combining modern medicine with a deeper understanding of healing rooted in nature and whole-person care.

Before becoming a physician, I worked in the culinary world as a private chef and also ran a successful catering and food art business in New York City called Charcu by Chef Deena. That experience gave me a unique perspective on the connection between food, metabolism, energy, and long-term wellness, and it continues to influence the way I care for patients today.

I went on to complete a residency in rural family medicine, which profoundly shaped my perspective as a physician. Rural medicine teaches you to think comprehensively and care for the whole patient rather than viewing health through a narrow specialty lens. I cared for patients of all ages and conditions, often managing complex issues with limited resources, and it reinforced the importance of listening carefully and understanding the bigger picture of someone’s health.

Over the years, I pursued additional training in functional medicine, hormone optimization, nutrition, and longevity medicine to better address the root causes behind chronic symptoms and disease. Today, my practice combines evidence-based medicine with a personalized, integrative approach focused on optimizing health, energy, hormones, metabolism, and longevity.

My goal has always been to help patients feel truly heard and understood while creating thoughtful, individualized plans that help them not only prevent disease, but genuinely thrive.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was balancing multiple demanding roles at the same time. I had three children during medical school and residency, so there were years where I was navigating the intensity of medical training while also trying to be present as a wife and mother. That required a tremendous amount of resilience, sacrifice, time management, and support.

Another challenge was pursuing a path in functional and integrative medicine before it became more mainstream. I always had a strong interest in root-cause medicine, nutrition, and lifestyle-based healing, but integrating those perspectives into a traditional medical environment sometimes meant taking a less conventional route and continuing to educate myself far beyond standard training.

Building a practice that truly reflects my philosophy of care has also been a journey. I wanted to create something more personalized and relationship-based than the traditional rushed healthcare model, where patients feel heard and physicians have the time to think deeply about health and prevention. Creating that kind of practice takes patience, persistence, and a willingness to do things differently.

At the same time, I think those challenges ultimately strengthened my perspective as both a physician and a person. They taught me resilience, adaptability, empathy, and the importance of staying authentic to the kind of medicine I always envisioned practicing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Dr Deena Werde, MD?
A personalized functional and integrative medicine practice focused on root-cause healing, hormone optimization, longevity, nutrition, and whole-person wellness.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that healing is deeply individualized. There is rarely a single answer or quick fix, and truly helping people requires listening carefully, understanding the bigger picture, and treating the whole person rather than just isolated symptoms or lab values.

I’ve also learned the importance of staying authentic to your vision, even when your path looks different from the traditional route. Some of the most meaningful growth in my journey came from embracing the intersection of medicine, nutrition, lifestyle, and human connection rather than trying to fit into one narrow box.

Most importantly, I’ve learned that health is about far more than the absence of disease. True wellness is about energy, vitality, resilience, purpose, and quality of life — and helping patients achieve that is what continues to inspire me every day.
