Today we’d like to introduce you to Cara Kaul.
Hi Cara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We started our practice in 2023 to deliver care the way we thought was best for patients. Dr. Beaman and I became friends in training, and when we both were graduating and getting into the job market, that’s when we decided to create our own practice and shape it the way we were hoping. We wanted to create something unique, rather than find a job that fit into that box. We wanted to incorporate at least some elements of therapy, even if we’re not doing formal psychotherapy. We wanted to make sure we had a very good idea of what our patients’ lives look like, what is missing, where is there room for improvement. We wanted to not just prescribe medications, but to be able to do more for our patients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our main struggle has been similar to most in mental health: largely due to the stigma that surrounds mental health. We’ve found that people who struggle with their mental health also struggle to find the correct care that fits their needs. Likewise, we’ve struggled to get the word out about the care we provide.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tranquility Psychiatry?
Our psychiatry practice is unique, as it is just the two of us. So, if a patient calls, they’re reaching one of us directly. If there is a question between appointments we’re easily accessible. We’ve kept our practice on the smaller side, similar to a concierge model. We work with patients virtually, throughout the state of Florida. We see patients age 18 and up, with a focus on women’s mental health, particularly around pregnancy and postpartum. Common conditions we treat include depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma and PTSD, mood disorders, ADHD and attention problems. We take a very collaborative and holistic approach in our psychiatry practice. We make treatment planning decision as a team with the patients themselves. We also coordinate care with the patient’s entire treatment team by working closely with other providers including therapists, primary care doctors and OBGYNs.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
There are pressures from insurance and regulatory bodies to prioritize efficiency (in the form of short, impersonal visits), unfortunately this is at the loss of patient centered care. We are actively striving to practice differently and reserve the humanistic approach to medicine. Technology has always been driven in part by healthcare and we see that continuing over the next 5-10 years, as AI and telehealth continues to expand. As our practice model is intentionally set up as telehealth this will allow us to continue to provide the best care possible to people where they are, even from the comfort of their homes.
