Community Highlights: Meet Bertha Hurtado of On the Run Coffee Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bertha Hurtado.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?

I began my career as a forensic anthropologist, spending the last five years in the field of law enforcement building a Cold Case Investigations Unit and helping identify and close decades-old cases. It was intense, purposeful work—but the long hours often kept me away from my family. I wanted a life where I could be present for them, not just in between shifts.

That desire led me to create On the Run Coffee Bar—South Florida’s first electric mobile café. It became the perfect blend of my love for specialty coffee, sustainability, and community. Best of all, it allowed me to bring my family—especially my boys—into the journey. They’re not just helping; they’re learning the value of commitment, entrepreneurship, and hard work—lessons that will stay with them long after the last cup is poured.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all easy! But I wouldn’t trade the bumps for anything. Transitioning from forensic anthropology and law enforcement into entrepreneurship was a massive leap. I went from solving cold cases and leading investigations to learning how to pull perfect espresso shots, manage inventory, and run a business from the ground up.

There were moments of deep self-doubt, financial uncertainty, and the overwhelming pressure of balancing motherhood, marriage, and a brand-new venture. I didn’t come from a business background, so everything—from permitting to branding to equipment failures—was a learning curve. But those struggles built resilience. Every setback taught me something valuable, and each challenge pushed me to grow in ways I never imagined.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about On the Run Coffee Bar?

On the Run Coffee Bar is South Florida’s first electric mobile café—a specialty coffee concept I created to bring together my love for sustainability, quality, and community. I serve ethically sourced coffee with intention—whether it’s a handcrafted espresso, a slow pour-over, or a seasonal favorite. For me, it’s never just a drink; it’s a moment worth savoring.

What makes us different is how we combine innovation with heart. Our eco-conscious mobile setup, now stationed at Emily’s Garden in Fort Lauderdale, allows us to serve in a way that’s forward-thinking yet personal. We also bring our coffee to private events, creating custom experiences that feel just as special as walking up to our bar.

This brand is personal to me—it’s a reflection of my journey and my values. On the Run Coffee Bar is about connection and is a living example of how purpose and intention can intersect—one cup at a time.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?

The quality that’s been most important to my success is grit, fueled by my love for coffee. Whether I was identifying remains in a cold case or learning to run a coffee business from the ground up, I’ve faced situations that tested me in every way. Grit kept me committed, pushing forward when things got tough, and staying focused despite the obstacles.

Starting over in a completely new field wasn’t easy. Building something meaningful takes more than passion, it demands perseverance, adaptability, and the courage to show up even when it’s uncomfortable. That mindset has carried me through the hardest moments and made the most rewarding ones possible.
